Reaching the Goan relative abroad who pays for the wedding or the house
When a Goan wedding or house is paid for from Dubai, London or a ship, the payer decides from far away. Send prices, progress and references as messages that still make sense when forwarded.

In many Goan families, the money for the wedding or the house comes from a relative in Dubai, in London or at sea. Someone at home does the visits and the talking. The payer decides from far away, on whatever reaches their phone. So send prices, progress and references in a form that survives being forwarded. One message should make sense to someone who was not in the room, with the figure, the date and a photograph. Voice notes to the relative at home do not reach the decision.
Two people, one decision
Builders, caterers, decorators and jewellers in Goa meet the same family: the real decision-maker is in Dubai or London, and nobody speaks to that person.
The relative at home sees the hall, meets you, speaks Konkani with you and has firm views on the flowers or the tiles. The relative abroad reads your quotation on a phone after a shift and asks one question: what exactly am I paying for? It is easy to serve the first person well and the second not at all. The second one signs off the money.
Many families ask the parish and their relatives first and check online afterwards. The relative abroad does the same, among Goans in the Gulf or in London. A name they recognise from home usually counts for more than anything you post.
Write every message so it survives forwarding
Whatever you send the family at home will be forwarded to the payer. Write it for the payer.
Leave out "as discussed" and "same as before". Neither means anything to someone who was not there. Each message stands on its own, with the date at the top.
Send one message, not seven. A photograph with a caption, the figure and the next step, all together, so a forward carries the whole thing. A quotation goes as a PDF, with the total and the two or three main lines repeated in the message itself for the reader who will not open an attachment at work.
Give one all-in figure in rupees, then what it includes and what it does not. "Hall, food for 300, decoration as in the photograph, no band, no liquor" is a figure a payer can approve without phoning anyone.
Talk to the family at home in Konkani if that is easier for both of you. Write the forwardable message in English, or in whichever language the payer has asked for.
For a house, a dated update in this layout does most of the work. Adapt it for a wedding by swapping the stage for the menu, the headcount and the hall plan.
[Family name] house, update 6, [date]
Stage: [old roof tiles relaid; plastering started in the hall]
Photos: [three, taken from the same corners as update 5]
Spent so far: ₹[amount] of the agreed ₹[estimate]
Next payment: ₹[amount] due on [date], for [what it pays for]
Decision needed: [floor tile A or B, by Friday, prices attached]
Questions: reply here, or call [name] between [time] and [time] India time
Same corners, every update. A payer abroad compares this week's photograph with the last one, and progress the payer can see is progress the payer will pay for.
References the payer can check from abroad
Ask a past family, especially one with a relative abroad, whether the payer may call or message them. Ask their permission each time. One conversation between two people in the Gulf who both paid for something in Goa settles more than a page of praise.
A short walk-through video of a finished house or a decorated hall, made with the owner's agreement, travels well on WhatsApp. So do Google reviews with real names.
Timing: the Gulf evening and the ship's Wi-Fi
Dubai is an hour and a half behind India, and Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia two and a half. A call at 8.30 in the evening here finds Dubai at seven, after work. The United Kingdom is four and a half or five and a half hours behind, depending on the season, which puts your late evening in their afternoon.
A relative at sea is different. Messages reach a seafarer when the ship has a connection or comes into port, sometimes days apart. Send one complete update rather than a running conversation, and never put a decision with a next-day deadline to someone on a ship. Ask the family when the seafarer next expects to be in port and plan the big decisions around it.
When the relative flies home, for Christmas, a feast or the wedding itself, have the site visit, the tasting or the final sign-off ready for those days. They will not get another chance soon.
Imagine a contractor restoring a house in Salcete
Imagine a contractor restoring an old family house in Salcete for a family whose son works in Dubai and pays for it. The contractor dealt with the mother, in Konkani, mostly by voice note. She forwarded some of them. The son heard four-minute clips about laterite and wiring with no figures in them.
Then a bill arrived for extra laterite work and new wiring, larger than the son expected and, as far as he knew, not approved. He held the next payment and the work stopped for a fortnight while the family argued.
The mistake was not the extra work, which the house needed. It was that the decision reached the payer only as a bill. What changed was the channel. A WhatsApp group now held the mother, the son and the contractor, with a dated update in the layout above after each stage. Any extra went in as a "decision needed" line with its price before work began. And a fixed call with the son on Sunday evenings at nine, India time.
Selling flats or plots to Goan families abroad is a different matter. The rules on property advertising and on money from abroad differ by state and body and change, so check with your own adviser or the regulator. NRI real estate advertising covers the targeting side.
Reread your last quotation as the payer
Open the last quotation you sent a family with someone abroad. Read it as that person would, on a phone after a shift, with no other context. Does it need a phone call to make sense? Rewrite it before the next one goes out. The quotation and update formats are ordinary sales collateral; if you want them shaped around your own trade, tell us what you need.
