Selling watches online: warranty, authenticity and the question every buyer asks

How to sell watches online in India when every buyer asks whether the watch is genuine and who honours the warranty: state your seller status, show the proof, and write the warranty line before the price.

Every watch buyer who messages you asks a version of the same thing: is it original, and if it stops, where do I take it? Answer it before she has to ask. On every product page, beside the price, say what kind of seller you are for that watch, who honours the warranty and where it is serviced. Then show proof: the stamped warranty card, the serial number, the box and papers. A seller who settles that in one line can hold a price above a cheaper listing that leaves it open.

Why price is not what decides it

The buyer arrives with a reference number. She has already seen the same model on four or five sites and in a dealer's WhatsApp status, at slightly different prices. What she is comparing is the risk, not the price.

The cheapest listing is often the one she trusts least. Odd, but true. A figure well below the authorised sellers reads as a parallel import at best and a copy at worst. The Instagram accounts selling "first copy" watches have taught buyers to assume the worst. So the honest seller who says nothing about status looks exactly like the dishonest one.

Say what kind of seller you are, watch by watch

Your status can differ from one brand to the next, and sometimes from one watch to the next. The page has to say which applies.

Your status for this watchWhat you can sayWhat you must not sayWhat the buyer gets
Authorised dealer for the brand"Authorised dealer", and point to the brand's own dealer listAnything about brands you are not authorised forThe brand's card, stamped by you; the brand's service network
Retailer supplied through a distributorWho supplies you, and the warranty as the brand confirms it for that channel"Authorised", unless the brand lists youWhatever the brand has confirmed to you in writing
Parallel import"Imported", where it was bought, and your own warranty"Brand warranty" or "India warranty", unless the brand confirms itYour warranty, at your workshop or service partner
Pre-ownedAge, service history, original and replaced parts, box and papers"New" or "unworn", unless it isYour own warranty, if you give one, for a stated period

The rule underneath: the word "authorised" belongs only to a seller the brand lists. A careful buyer checks the dealer locator on the brand's site. If you are not on it, the word costs you more than it earns.

The proof that settles it

Photograph the warranty card that comes with the actual watch, with part of the serial number masked so nobody can copy it onto a fake card. Then show a specimen card, stamped and dated by you, with no buyer details on it, so the buyer knows what will arrive. Add the case back, the box and papers, and your GST invoice format with your business name on it. For an automatic, a short clip of the seconds hand sweeping and the crown winding does more than any paragraph. For a pre-owned piece, the service receipts are the listing.

Then the warranty line itself, written once and pasted on every listing of that status. For authorised stock:

Warranty: the brand's warranty in India, for the period on the card.
The card is stamped and dated by us on the day the watch is dispatched.
Service: at the brand's service centres. Message us and we will tell you the nearest one.
If it stops within the warranty period, message us first.

For a parallel import:

Imported. This watch carries our warranty, not the brand's warranty in India.
Our warranty: the period on your invoice, serviced at our workshop.
If it stops, message us. We arrange collection and return.

Writing the second one feels like admitting a weakness. It is the opposite. The buyer who reads it and still pays knew what she was buying.

For example: a T. Nagar watch shop that went online

For example, imagine a watch shop in T. Nagar, Chennai, that started selling on its own website and Instagram. Its stock was authorised for two brands, with a few parallel imports of a third. Every listing used the brand's catalogue description and the same warranty line copied from it.

A buyer in Coimbatore bought one of the parallel imports, took it to the brand's service centre when it started losing time, and was told the warranty did not apply. She posted the reply on Instagram. Nothing about the watch was fake; the listing had simply said something the shop could not honour. Suppose the watch was ₹18,000: the shop paid for the repair itself, refunded nothing, and still lost the two orders that had been sitting in that buyer's cousins' chats. All of this is invented.

The shop rewrote one line per listing. Authorised stock now shows the stamped-card photo and the first warranty block. The parallel imports moved to their own collection, titled as imports, with the second block. And the shop's WhatsApp quick reply for "is it original" now changes with the status of the watch being asked about.

When not to list a watch online

Read your dealer agreement before you list a brand online. If it limits where or how you may sell, a marketplace listing can cost you the dealership, which is worth more than the sale. Use the brand's logo only as that agreement allows.

Skip a fixed online price for the high-value pieces where every buyer will want to see the watch live before paying. Show the watch, the status and the warranty, and put a button to book a video call on WhatsApp where the price would be. For smartwatches, say whose service centre takes a claim for the stock you sell.

What to do next

Open five of your listings and ask the buyer's question of each: is it original, and who fixes it? If the answer is not on the page above the price, write the status line and the warranty block for each kind of stock you hold. Proof outweighs price in several categories of online selling, and watches are the plainest case. If you want help writing the lines with website content writing and copywriting and deciding where each watch should be sold, tell us what you need.

Questions

Questions owners ask.

Should we sell pre-owned watches alongside new ones?
Only in a separate collection with its own warranty line. A buyer who finds a pre-owned piece among new stock starts doubting the new stock. Show the age, the service history, what has been replaced and what comes with it, and price it as pre-owned rather than as a discounted new watch.
How do we answer "is it original" on WhatsApp without sounding defensive?
Send the same proof every time: a photo of that watch's warranty card with part of the serial masked, a photo of the case back, and one line on who honours the warranty. Facts in a fixed order read as routine. An offended paragraph about your reputation reads as a seller with something to hide.
Does matching the lowest online price help?
Seldom, for watches. A buyer who sees your price below every authorised seller assumes a parallel import or a fake. Compete on what an authorised seller can add: the stamped card, a strap sized to her wrist before dispatch, and a person to message when the watch stops.
