Cleaning and household supplies online: why the basket matters more than one product
Why one bottle of floor cleaner loses money online, and how a minimum cart, a restock box, a refill path and society delivery days make household cleaning orders pay before you spend on ads.

Your floor cleaner sells well online, and once the courier is paid, every one-bottle order loses money. That is the trap in household cleaning supplies. The products are cheap, heavy and bought again and again, so the order that pays is the basket, not the bottle. Set a minimum cart that covers delivery. Sell the household's restock as one box, ship refills instead of full bottles, and remind past buyers before they run out. Spend on ads only once a first order pays its own way.
Why does one bottle lose money?
Weight. A litre of floor cleaner, boxed and wrapped against leaks, is a heavy parcel for a low price. Take a ₹149 bottle that costs you ₹68 to make. Add ₹14 of packing, ₹58 of courier, ₹9 of payment charges and ₹6 set aside for leaks. You are ₹6 down before a single ad. Every rupee figure in this post is an illustration; use your own.
Now put a toilet cleaner and a dishwash liquid in the same box. The courier charge rises with the weight, but far less than the order value does. Now it pays. How to set the minimum cart from that sum is worked through in our post on making small orders pay. Cleaning adds one line to it: the leak allowance, on every liquid in the box.
Hold the minimum firmly if every order goes by courier. Relax it if you deliver in your own town on your own route, where one more stop costs little and a high minimum only turns neighbours away.
Sell the restock, not the product
A household does not run out of floor cleaner on its own. It restocks the cleaning shelf alongside the month's groceries, and that restock is what the kirana and the quick commerce apps are competing for. Your answer is a home cleaning box: floor, toilet, kitchen and laundry, with garbage bags and scrub pads, sized for a two-person flat or a family of five. Price it above the minimum cart and let the buyer swap any item for another. Reminding a buyer that the box is due works as for any consumable, set out in our post on repeat purchase by product type.
The refill path
Refills change the arithmetic again. A pouch weighs less than a bottle, ships in a smaller box and rarely leaks the way a bottle with a loose cap does. It also fits only your dispenser, which gives the buyer a reason to come back to you rather than the shop downstairs.
Refill what the buyer keeps on the counter: the handwash pump, the dishwash dispenser, the trigger spray for glass and the kitchen. Toilet cleaner and phenyl live under the sink and go out with the empty bottle, so sell those as bottles. The path then runs in a fixed order. The first box carries the dispenser and one full bottle. The second order offers the pouch first, with the bottle below it for anyone who lost the dispenser. Print on each pouch which dispenser it fills, and draw the fill line on the dispenser itself.
Skip concentrates where a wrong dilution does harm, such as on a marble or granite floor, unless the dilution is printed large on the pouch and shown in a short video. A buyer whose floor is marked will not reorder.
Society delivery days: one gate, many flats
Gated apartment societies change the courier sum completely. If twenty flats in one society order for the same day, one vehicle makes one trip to one gate. The cost per order falls so far that the society minimum can sit well below the courier minimum.
Do not post in a society WhatsApp group uninvited. Write to the residents' association first, once, in words like these:
Namaste. We are [business name], a [town] maker of floor cleaner, dishwash liquid and laundry products. A few residents of [society] already order from us. We would like to offer the society one fixed delivery day, [day of the week], with orders placed by 7 pm the evening before. Boxes would be left at [the security desk, or with a resident who has offered]. May we share this once in the residents' group? We will not post again unless the committee asks. If you would rather not, a printed notice at the gate is fine, or we will leave it there.
If the committee says no, leave it there. A yes still needs the numbers to work. Divide what one run to that gate costs you by your margin on one box: that is how many boxes the run needs before it pays. Skip societies too small or too scattered to reach it.
When are more ads the right answer?
Once a first order covers its cost and buyers come back for a second, advertising grows a business that works. Before that, it grows the loss. Ads also make sense for a product that pays on its own: a cleaning machine, or a large refill pack bought for a whole society.
Watch what the ads claim. Statements about killing germs, or about being safe around children and pets, come under rules for chemical and disinfectant products that differ and change. Check with your own adviser or the regulator before you print or advertise one.
For example: an Ahmedabad floor cleaner maker and the ₹99 trial bottle
Imagine a maker of floor cleaner, phenyl and dishwash liquid in Ahmedabad, selling to homes through its own website and Instagram. It runs ads for a ₹99 trial bottle with free delivery. Plenty of people order. Each order loses money on the courier, and few buyers come back, because one bottle was never enough to form a habit.
The maker took the trial bottle off the ads. It now travels inside the cleaning box as a free sample of the next product. The ads sell the box, priced above the minimum cart. Repeat buyers get the dishwash and handwash as pouches. Two societies in Satellite and Bopal said yes to the association message and now get boxes on one weekday each, left at the security desk. The ad money buys orders that pay for their own courier.
Cost one box before the next ad
Cost one ordinary order the way the bottle was costed above, then one box. If the bottle loses money and the box does not, pause the single-bottle ads before anything else. Then list the societies where you already have two or more buyers; those are the first association messages to send. Household brands are one of the trades on our e-commerce sales and marketing page, and if you want help with the sums, the box or customer retention, tell us what you need.
