How long does SEO take to produce results?

Expect first movement in three to four months and countable enquiries in six to twelve. Local search can move in weeks.

An espalier pear trained on five wires up a sunlit brick wall, its lower branches tied out in leaf with fruit on the first, the top wires still bare, a watering can and a bundle of ties at its foot.

Expect the first real movement in three to four months, and enquiries at a volume worth counting in six to twelve. Local search moves faster, often in four to eight weeks, because a corrected Google Business Profile and a few reviews can change map results quickly. Competitive terms with strong national websites against you can take a year or more. If someone promises page one in ninety days, they are selling you terms you already rank for.

What a result should mean

Rankings are not results. A page can sit at position four for a term nobody searches and produce nothing. Three things count, in this order.

Enquiries you can trace to search, counted monthly. Then the searches your pages now appear for, because that tells you whether you are becoming visible for the things you actually sell. Then the pages Google has indexed and is showing, which is the leading indicator that tells you at month two whether month six will happen.

What makes it faster

A healthy, quick website you do not have to rebuild first. An existing domain that has been online for years. A service that people actively search for, which is most local and technical services. Publishing at a steady pace rather than in one burst. A Google Business Profile with genuine reviews arriving each month. And a specific offering, because "CNC machining of aluminium components in Peenya" is a far easier thing to rank for than "manufacturing".

The largest accelerator is usually unglamorous: writing the pages you should already have. A firm with one Services page listing nine services and no page for any of them is not doing SEO. It is waiting.

What makes it slower

A new domain with no history. A site built on a platform that cannot be changed without a developer for every edit. A sector where national marketplaces and large aggregators hold the top results, which is the situation for most retail products. Publishing four posts and stopping. Inconsistent business details across the website, the profile, IndiaMART and JustDial, which costs both rankings and mentions in AI answers. And no internal owner, so approvals take three weeks each.

Why local search moves in weeks when the rest does not

Map results are judged differently. Distance, profile completeness, categories, review count and recency, and the consistency of your name, address and phone across the web matter more than the size of your website.

For example, take a hypothetical tax consulting firm in Jayanagar with a half-filled profile, an old landline and six reviews. It can often reach the map results for "tax consultant near me" within six to eight weeks. The fix is a corrected profile, the right primary category, real photographs, the services listed, and a review asked from every completed client. The same firm competing for "income tax filing India" would be a two-year project with no certainty at the end. Spend where the distance is short.

What to watch each month so you are not waiting blind

Ask your agency, or yourself, for five things on one page each month: pages published, pages indexed, new searches you appear for, enquiries traced to search, and reply time on those enquiries. Reply time belongs on an SEO report. Search enquiries that sit unanswered for two days make the whole programme look like a failure.

Also make sure the enquiries are being recorded at all. We regularly audit businesses where search was working and nobody knew, because calls landed on a mobile and nothing was written down.

When to stop waiting, and what to do next

Give it six months on the condition that the work is visible. If at month three the pages have not been published, the profile has not been corrected and nothing is indexed, the problem is delivery, not patience. Change that before you change your expectations.

Also be honest about capacity. There is no point pursuing search for a service you cannot deliver more of.

Write down the ten things you sell, most valuable first. Check whether each has a page of its own that answers the question a buyer would ask. Then check whether it appears when you search the term on a phone. The gaps in that list, in that order, are your first six months.

Questions

Questions owners ask.

Can anyone guarantee first page in three months?
No, and an agency that offers it is either selling you branded terms you already rank for or planning something that will cost you later. Nobody controls Google's ranking. What can be committed to is the work, the schedule and the reporting.
Should I run ads while SEO builds?
Usually yes, if you have capacity to fill now. Ads buy enquiries from month one at a cost per enquiry; search lowers that cost over time. Running both also tells you which search terms actually convert, which makes the SEO work faster.
Is it faster for a new website or an old one?
An old domain with existing pages and links moves faster, provided it is technically healthy. A brand new site spends the first two or three months simply being crawled, indexed and trusted. A badly built old site can be slower than a new one, because the cleanup comes first.
What if nothing has happened after six months?
Ask three questions: how many pages were published, are they indexed, and are they about things people actually search. Most stalled programmes fail on the first. If the answer is four blog posts and no service pages, the timeline never started.
