Why your website is not ranking on Google
Almost every SME ranking problem is one of six things: a crawl block, no matching page, a slow site, or a phrase nobody searches.

If your website is not ranking, the cause is almost always one of six things: Google cannot crawl or index it, you have no page that actually matches the search, the page is too slow or broken on mobile, the phrase you are checking has almost no search volume, the site is too new for the competition you have chosen, or your business details are inconsistent enough that Google cannot confirm who you are. How the site looks has nothing to do with it. Start by finding out which of the six applies, because the fixes are entirely different.
First, check whether Google can see the site at all
Open Google Search Console. If you do not have it connected, that is the first job, and it takes ten minutes.
Then search your own domain with the site prefix in Google and count the results. If your service pages are missing, nothing else matters yet. Common causes are a robots file blocking the site after a redesign, a staging site left with a no-index tag that went live with it, pages built entirely in a script that renders nothing for a crawler, or no internal links pointing at the page so nothing leads to it.
We find an unnoticed no-index tag surprisingly often, usually on a site built six months earlier that has never produced a single visit from search and nobody knew why.
The six causes, and how to tell which one you have
| Cause | How you would know | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Not indexed | Search Console shows pages excluded or discovered but not indexed | Remove the block, add internal links, submit a sitemap |
| No matching page | You have a services page, not a page per service | Write one page per thing you sell, titled as the search |
| Slow or broken on mobile | The page takes over three seconds on 4G, or text overlaps | Compress images, drop unused plugins, better hosting |
| Nobody searches that phrase | The phrase is your internal product name or slogan | Target the words buyers type, checked in a keyword tool |
| Site is new for that competition | Under six months old, competing on a metro-wide phrase | Start with specific, local phrases and build up |
| Inconsistent business details | Name, address or phone differ across site, profile and directories | Make all three identical everywhere |
Work down the list in order. There is no point writing content for a site Google is not indexing.
The mistake behind most of it: no page for the search
This is the single commonest cause we see in Indian SMEs, and it is not technical.
A machine shop that does laser cutting, CNC bending, welding and powder coating has one page called "Services" with four bullet points. A buyer searches "laser cutting stainless steel Bengaluru". There is no page on that site about laser cutting, so there is nothing to rank. The shop's owner concludes that SEO does not work.
Google ranks pages, not businesses. If you want to appear for a thing you sell, there has to be a page about that thing, titled the way a buyer would say it, answering the question in the first paragraph, with the specifications and a named person to contact. The same page is what an AI assistant needs in order to mention you at all.
The phrase you are checking may be the wrong test
Owners usually test their ranking by searching their own company name, which proves nothing, or by searching a very broad phrase with heavy competition, which is discouraging and not useful.
Check the phrases a buyer would type. Not "industrial supplier", but "6 mm MS plate laser cutting Peenya". Not "best hospital", but "dialysis centre Yeshwanthpur". These specific phrases have less volume individually and much better intent, and a small site can win them within months. Twenty of them together produce more enquiries than one broad phrase you will never reach.
Also check on a phone, in a private window, with location switched on, because that is how your buyers are searching and the results differ substantially from a desktop browser logged into your own account.
A Peenya fabrication shop and the page that was missing
For example, imagine a fabrication unit in Peenya, Bengaluru with a laser cutting machine, press brakes and a powder coating line. The details and figures below are illustrative. The website was two years old, looked good, and produced almost no enquiries from search.
Three things were found. The site had four pages in total, one of them a services page listing eight capabilities. Search Console showed the contact page had never been indexed because no link pointed to it from anywhere. And the phone number on the site differed from the number on the Google Business Profile and from the IndiaMART listing, because a new number had been taken the previous year.
The fixes were unglamorous. The number was made identical in all three places. Four capability pages were written, each stating the material, the thickness range, the bed size, the tolerance, the lead time and the engineer to call. A sitemap was submitted.
Enquiries rising from two a month to nine, at an average order of ₹60,000, changes the arithmetic of the whole workshop. That figure is illustrative. What was real was that the buyers searching for those capabilities had been there all along and there had been nothing for them to find.
What not to spend money on while this is broken
Buying backlinks. For a local commercial search in India, accurate listings and a complete Google Business Profile do more, and bought links carry a risk your business does not need.
Publishing a blog article every week on general topics while your service pages do not exist. Write the service pages first.
Paying for a monthly report of keyword positions with no reference to enquiries. Positions on phrases nobody searches are easy to produce and worth nothing.
Rebuilding the site because it looks dated. If the content and the technical basics are the problem, a redesign will reproduce them in a new theme.
What to do next
Connect Search Console if it is not connected, then list the ten things you sell and check whether each one has a page of its own with the buyer's words in the title. That list, plus whatever Search Console reports about indexing, identifies the cause in almost every case. If you would rather have it checked and scored for you, book a free audit.
