What brand awareness means for a hospital
Not that people have heard the name. That when they need a specific kind of care, the hospital comes to mind for that kind of care — and that when they check, the reviews and the doctors’ profiles confirm it. A hospital can be well known and still lose the orthopaedic patient to the smaller centre down the road that is known for knees. Awareness that is not attached to a department and a catchment does not bring patients.
Why targeted beats broad
A hoarding on the ring road reaches everyone and speaks to no one. A campaign for the maternity wing aimed at women in the catchment who are searching for it, with the obstetrician’s name and the delivery packages, reaches the few hundred people who will decide this year — and it can be measured. New parents, families with elderly members, people searching a procedure: each is a targeted campaign with its own message, its own page and its own number, rather than one message for the whole city.
The four things that build it
Content that answers real questions, with a named doctor: what a knee replacement involves, what a normal delivery costs here, when a fever needs a hospital. These are the pages that make a hospital the answer at 11pm.
Local search, per department: a Google Business Profile for the major departments, pages that name the locality, and the technical basics so the site loads on a phone.
Reviews, asked for at discharge, by department, and answered — including the complaints, calmly, because the reply is read by every future patient.
The neighbourhood itself: health camps, tie-ups with the schools and the companies nearby, and the doctors seen in the community. Awareness for a hospital is still partly built in person.
One example, stated modestly
Chord Road Hospital in Bengaluru is the example we usually give. The work was department-level: local search for the services the hospital wanted to be known for, pages and listings for each, and outreach to the catchment rather than the city. Appointment enquiries for those departments rose within the first months, and the hospital became a name people in the area mention for those services specifically — which is what brand awareness actually is. The full account is in our case studies.
Where to start
Choose one department the hospital wants to be known for. Build its page, its listing and its doctor profiles; ask its discharged patients for reviews; run one targeted campaign for it in the catchment; measure enquiries for that department for a quarter. Then do the next one. A hospital that does this for three departments in a year has built more brand than five years of hoardings — and it can see the number.
