Veterinary clinics · Referral marketing
One owner in the morning park crowd talks to forty others.
Pet owners are the most talkative customers any clinic has. They meet each other every morning, they share a society group, and a first-time owner asks a breeder or a groomer before they ask the internet. GullySales builds the ask to owners, the working relationships with the pet trades, and the courtesy that keeps referrals coming from other vets.
Scope, fee, reporting and term are agreed in writing after we have read your brief and spoken to you.

What referral marketing means
Referral marketing in a regulated practice is being the one a physician, a colleague or a former patient names, without being paid to, because paying for a referral is restricted in most of these professions. GullySales builds the ask into the moment a patient is satisfied and into the note that goes back to the referring doctor, and it never involves a fee.
Last updated 5 Oct 2026. Rules for this trade differ by state and professional body, and they change. We describe restrictions in general terms, so check the current position with your own council or adviser before you publish anything.
For veterinary clinics
Where it usually goes wrong, and what we would do.
“The park at seven in the morning is a room full of your buyers”
The same owners meet daily and compare notes on vets, food and tick season. One person who trusts you reaches more pet owners in a week than a month of posting, and none of it costs anything.
“Breeders, groomers and boarding kennels choose a first-time owner's vet”
Somebody bringing home their first pup asks whoever handed them the animal. That person names one clinic. Being the clinic they name is a relationship you have to build deliberately, animal by animal.
“A specialist referral only continues if the patient comes back”
When a small clinic sends an orthopaedic case to a hospital and the owner never returns, that clinic stops referring. If you take referrals, send a written note back and return the patient. If you make them, ask for the same.
What we do
What we deliver for veterinary clinics.
Every deliverable, what it covers for you, and the result it is there to produce. Nothing here is an extra.
An ask made at the counter, not on a poster
Short wording for the desk after a good visit, asking the owner to mention the clinic when somebody in their group or their park asks for a vet.
Result: The recommendation happens where owners actually talk.
Something short enough to forward
Two lines, a number and a location that an owner can paste into a society or breed group without editing anything.
Result: The recommendation arrives in a form people can act on.
A working list of the pet trades near you
Breeders, groomers, pet shops, boarding kennels, trainers and rescue groups in your area, with who has been met and what they send.
Result: You know which trades are feeding the clinic.
A referral note that goes back to the referring vet
A short written summary of what was done, sent to the clinic that sent the case, with the patient returned for continuing care.
Result: The clinic that referred once refers again.
Referral source recorded at registration
One question when a new animal is registered, stored in a single field: the breeder, the groomer, another owner, another clinic or a search.
Result: You can see which relationships bring in new patients.
A view on what may and may not be paid for
Where fee sharing and commission sit for a veterinary practice, raised in general terms with the points to confirm with your own veterinary council or adviser.
Result: You settle the question before somebody offers you a cut.
How the result is measured
- Referrals received
- Referral conversion rate
- Cost per referred customer
Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.
How referrals reach a veterinary clinic
Pet owners ask each other, and first-time owners ask whoever sold them the puppy.
- The owner at the counter
- Ask at the end of a visit, while the animal is calm, whether she knows a friend who has just got a puppy. Write the name of whoever comes in on the registration form.
- The breeder
- A breeder gives each new puppy owner a vet's name. Offer a short note for the puppy pack covering the first vaccinations and your hours, with the breeder's agreement and no payment.
- The groomer and the boarding kennel
- Both see a dog that is not well before anyone else does. Tell them how to reach you in an emergency and when you can see a case, and write back to them after a referral.
- The referring vet and the specialist
- A specialist visit continues only if the pet returns to the first vet. Send a short note after each referred case, stating the findings and the plan, and send the animal back.
- The pet shop and the feed store
- Staff are asked about vets all day. Visit, leave cards and agree what the shop does when somebody asks for a vet, without any fee for a vaccination or visit.
- What never to do
- Never pay a breeder or a shop per vaccination or per puppy sold, and never give treatment advice in a society group chat. Rules for veterinary advertising differ by state, so check with your own council.

How it works
From your first message to the first report.
No open-ended retainer. Every step gives you something in writing.
First
Your brief
You tell us what you need in a few short steps: your business, what you want, where enquiries come from and how they are handled.
After the brief
A conversation and a written scope
We read it, then talk with whoever handles your enquiries. If you want our help, the scope, the fee and the reporting come in writing, and nothing starts before you have read them.
Before work starts
Baseline recorded
The numbers this work is meant to move, such as enquiries, quotations, orders, visits or renewals, written down so every later report has an honest comparison.
After the baseline
The first fix goes live
The fix we agreed to start with is put in place and measured against the baseline, whether that is a reply, a follow-up, a page, a listing or the handover between marketing and sales.
As agreed
Report against the baseline
What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words. How often you get it is set in writing before work starts.
At renewal
Renew on the numbers
The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. The length is agreed in writing before anything starts.
How the referral marketing work runs
- 1
Understand your margin and customer relationship
We agree what reward is genuinely sustainable and appropriate for your business and customer type.
- 2
Audit existing informal referrals
We check how much word of mouth already happens, to size expectations for the formal programme realistically.
- 3
Design the offer and mechanism
A specific reward and an easy sharing method are built and tested.
- 4
Implement and promote
The programme is surfaced at the right moments in your customer journey.
- 5
Measure and adjust
We track referrals and conversions, adjusting the reward or promotion if uptake is low.
Why us
Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.
Marketing and sales, as one job
Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.
The person on the first call does the work
No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.
A baseline before anything starts
Your numbers are written down on day one, so every later report compares against something honest.
The fee in writing, split three ways
Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.
No guarantees we cannot keep
The term is agreed in writing and never a default twelve months. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.
One office, and we say so
