Book and magazine publishers · Local SEO

Put the press, the sales counter and the book fairs on the map for the people near them.

Local SEO for a publisher is the work of appearing on Google Maps and in local results for the places where a reader or a buyer can actually come to you: a press with a sales counter, a warehouse, a stall at a fair or a launch event. GullySales sets up only what is real, and says plainly when a publisher has little to gain from it.

Scope, fee, reporting and term are agreed in writing after we have read your brief and spoken to you.

What local SEO means

Local SEO is the work of making your business show up for searches that name your town or locality, such as a service plus an area name. GullySales sets up locality pages, local citations and map listings so nearby customers find you before a competitor across town.

For book and magazine publishers

Where it usually goes wrong, and what we would do.

  • “Most publishers have an office, not a shop”

A profile for a business that does not serve visitors may be refused or suspended, so the right setup depends on whether a person can walk in and buy.

  • “Local readers look for launches and signings”

A city's readers search for author events and book fairs by place and date. A listing that names the venue and time reaches them before the day.

  • “Booksellers are the local presence”

For many publishers, the map result that matters belongs to the bookshops that stock the titles, so being on the shelf and in their stock lists is the local work.

What we do

What we deliver for book and magazine publishers.

Every deliverable, what it covers for you, and the result it is there to produce. Nothing here is an extra.

  1. Honest assessment of what local search can do

A check of whether you have a staffed sales counter, a warehouse that receives visitors or only an office, and what kind of profile each allows.

Result: You do not set up a profile that Google may suspend.

  2. Business Profile for a staffed sales counter

Where a counter exists: category, hours, photographs of the shelves, the titles on sale and a phone that is answered.

Result: A reader nearby can find the counter and walk in.

  3. Event listings for launches and signings

Each launch, signing or stall posted with venue, date, time and the titles, on your site and on event pages.

Result: Readers in the city can find the date before it passes.

  4. Stockist list with addresses

A page that lists the bookshops that stock your titles in each city, with the address and phone, checked with each shop.

Result: A reader knows where to find the book nearby.

  5. Listing clean-up across directories

Your name, address and phone checked on JustDial, Sulekha and the publishers' directories, with old entries corrected.

Result: Every listing gives the same details.

  6. Local visibility report

Calls, direction requests and event page visits against the baseline, with a note on which listings send real enquiries.

Result: You see whether local work earns its place.

How the result is measured

  • Map pack ranking
  • Local search visibility
  • Enquiries by locality

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

What Google weighs here

What Google Maps weighs when a reader or a buyer searches for a publisher or a bookshop nearby.

A real, staffed address
A profile needs a place where a customer can be served. If you have only an office, check Google's current guidelines before creating one. A mailbox address risks suspension.
Category and what you sell
Choose the closest category, such as publisher or book store, and list the kinds of title you sell. A press that sells at its counter should say so, with the hours it is open to visitors.
Reviews from readers and sellers
Ask readers who bought at the counter and booksellers who work with you, without payment. A review that names a title or an event helps another reader decide to visit.
Photographs of shelves and events
Add the shelves at the counter, a launch or a signing with the speakers' permission, and the sign outside. A profile with no pictures looks like a closed shop.
Event pages that carry date and venue
Post each launch, fair stall or signing with venue, date, time and the titles, as soon as it is fixed. Remove it when it is over, so the listing does not look abandoned.
Name, address and phone consistency
Write the imprint name, the address and the phone the same on Google, JustDial, the distributor's sheet and the invoice. Two imprints under one office need clear separate entries.

Who it is for

This is written for these book and magazine publishers.

  • General and literary trade publishers
  • Academic and textbook publishers
  • Children's book publishers
  • Regional language publishers
  • Self-publishing houses and small presses
  • Consumer magazine publishers
  • Trade, technical and journal publishers
  • Educational and competitive exam book publishers

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • You want a guaranteed Google ranking or a guaranteed number of leads. Nobody honest can promise either.
  • You need enquiries by next week and have nobody to answer them.
  • You want posts and reach reported, not enquiries and orders.

How it works

From your first message to the first report.

No open-ended retainer. Every step gives you something in writing.

  1. First

    Your brief

You tell us what you need in a few short steps: your business, what you want, where enquiries come from and how they are handled.

  2. After the brief

A conversation and a written scope

We read it, then talk with whoever handles your enquiries. If you want our help, the scope, the fee and the reporting come in writing, and nothing starts before you have read them.

  3. Before work starts

    Baseline recorded

Enquiries by source, reply time, conversion and cost per order, written down so every later report has an honest comparison.

  4. After the baseline

    The first fix goes live

The fix we agreed to start with is put in place and measured against the baseline, whether that is reply time, a follow-up sequence, the page buyers land on or the handover between marketing and sales.

  5. As agreed

    Report against the baseline

What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words. How often you get it is set in writing before work starts.

  6. At renewal

    Renew on the numbers

The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. The length is agreed in writing before anything starts.

How the local seo work runs

  1. 1

    Audit every listing

We check the Google Business Profile and directory listings for every branch against what should actually be shown.

  2. 2

    Complete and correct

Profiles are filled in fully and inconsistent details are corrected across every directory found.

  3. 3

    Build location pages

Each branch gets a page written for its own area, not a copy of the head office page with the address changed.

  4. 4

    Set up review handling

A simple process for requesting and responding to reviews is put in place with whoever is closest to the customer.

  5. 5

    Report and adjust

Map actions and enquiries per branch are reported, and branches falling behind are prioritised the next month.

Why us

Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.

  • Marketing and sales, as one job

Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.

  • The person on the first call does the work

No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.

  • A baseline before anything starts

Your numbers are written down on day one, so every later report compares against something honest.

  • The fee in writing, split three ways

Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.

  • No guarantees we cannot keep

The term is agreed in writing and never a default twelve months. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.

  • One office, and we say so

Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. We work across India by call and WhatsApp and travel when a session needs to be in person.

#257, 3rd floor, Sri Nanjundeshwara Complex, Nagarbhavi 8th Block, Outer Ring Road. How we work.

Can a publisher with no shop have a Google Business Profile?
Check Google's current guidelines. A business with no staffed premises where customers come may not qualify for a visible address, and a profile that breaks the rules can be suspended. If you do not have a counter, put your effort into your site and stockists instead.
We share an office with another company. Does that matter?
Shared premises can cause listings to be flagged, especially if no one at the address deals with visitors. Use a profile only if your own staff receive customers there, and state the floor and the name on the board.
How do we show the bookshops that stock us?
Ask each shop to confirm it holds your titles, and then list its name, address and phone on a stockist page. Update it when a shop stops stocking. A stale list sends readers to shelves that are empty.
A competitor lists a fake office near ours. What can we do?
Report it through the platform with the reason. Google decides in its own time and removal cannot be promised. Meanwhile keep your own listing accurate and your reviews and photographs current.
Should we sell directly or through retailers?
Both, for different readers. Retailers and distributors reach people who never visit your site, while direct sales keep the margin and the reader's details. Check your distribution agreements first, as some limit what discount you may offer on your own site.
Do we need our own website when titles are on large online stores?
Yes. The retailer's page carries your title among thousands, and the retailer holds the reader. Your own page can carry the full blurb, an excerpt, the author's story and your newsletter sign-up, and it is yours to keep current.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped after we have read your brief and spoken to you, and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after we have spoken, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
It depends on the trade, the channel and what is already in place. After we have read your brief and spoken to you, we say what we would expect to move first and how it will be measured against the baseline. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you speak to before anything starts. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
