E-commerce · Beauty & Makeup

Foundation is a shade, an undertone and a skin type, and the page gives the buyer none of them.

Face products are the highest-return part of a makeup range, because a shade that is wrong cannot be used. A buyer is matching three things at once: depth, undertone and the skin's behaviour at midday. Each is something the page has to help with.

A 90-minute audit call and a written, scored report. Turnaround, reporting and term are agreed in writing after the audit.

In one paragraph

Face makeup is foundation, concealer, BB and CC creams, primer, powder, blush, bronzer and highlighter, bought to match a skin tone and a skin type. GullySales works on shade finders and skin-tone swatches, the oily-skin and dry-skin questions, and the repeat orders that follow once a buyer has found their shade.

Once a buyer finds the right shade, they reorder it, which makes the first match the most valuable sale in the range.

Who it is for

This is written for you if you sell face makeup online.

  • Brands with a foundation and concealer range of several shades
  • Sellers of compact powders, primers and setting sprays for hot, humid cities
  • Brands whose blush and highlighter sell on creators' tutorials
  • Sellers on Nykaa and Amazon who are returned for shade more than for quality

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • A brand with only two or three foundation shades that cannot fit most skin tones and will not say so
  • Anyone who wants the page to say a product treats acne, scars or any skin condition

How buyers choose

What decides the sale of face makeup.

  1. Depth and undertone

Fair to deep is the depth, and warm, cool or neutral is the undertone. Buyers search with phrases like 'foundation for medium warm skin' and compare with a shade they already use.

  2. Coverage and skin type

Light, medium or full coverage, and whether it suits oily, dry or combination skin. A buyer in a humid city looks for a base that does not slide by afternoon.

  3. Shade matching to a product they own

Buyers ask whether your shade 120 is close to their current brand's shade. A chart that compares to common shade names saves a chat.

  4. Finish in photographs and on video

The same foundation looks matte in one image and glowing in another. Buyers read reviews with photographs, and check whether the lighting was natural.

Where sales are lost

What usually goes wrong when you sell face makeup online.

In the words sellers use on the first call.

  • “The shade is wrong and the product is unusable”

A buyer who ordered shade 4 when shade 3 would have matched writes to you or leaves a review. The product is opened and cannot go back to stock.

  • “People ask for a shade recommendation and we do not know the answer”

A reply on Instagram or WhatsApp that asks for a photograph in daylight is the best answer, but nobody on the team has time for it.

  • “Our deeper shades are the ones that sit unsold”

Buyers with deeper skin often find the range thin and stop looking. The shades exist, but the images and the shade names do not show them.

What we do

What you get for face makeup.

Each deliverable and what it is there to change.

  1. A shade finder

A short questionnaire on skin depth, undertone and a current product, which ends on a shade with an alternative.

  2. A swatch sheet across depths

Each foundation and concealer shade on at least six skin tones, in the same lighting, used on listings and in ads.

  3. A matching table

Which of your foundation shades match the usual shade names of other brands, kept by someone who has tried them on.

  4. A coverage and finish guide

A page that explains light, medium and full coverage in your range and shows the finish on video.

How the result is measured

  • Purchases
  • Conversion rate
  • Customer acquisition cost
  • Repeat purchase rate
  • Return rate
  • Returns by shade

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

How it works

From your first message to the first report.

No open-ended retainer. Every step gives you something in writing.

  1. First

    Free audit call

90 minutes with whoever handles your enquiries: how they arrive, how fast they are answered, where they are lost.

  2. After the call

    Written, scored report

Six areas scored, fixes ranked by return and cost. If you want our help, the scope, the fee and the reporting come with it, in writing.

  3. Before work starts

    Baseline recorded

Enquiries by source, reply time, conversion and cost per order, written down so every later report has an honest comparison.

  4. After the baseline

    The first fix goes live

Usually the cheapest one on the report: reply time, a follow-up sequence or the marketing-to-sales handover.

  5. As agreed

    Report against the baseline

What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words. How often you get it is set in writing before work starts.

  6. At renewal

    Renew on the numbers

The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. The length is agreed in writing before anything starts.

What we need from you

What to have ready before the audit call.

None of it has to be tidy. We read what you have.

  • Your shade chart and the shades sold most and returned most
  • Photographs and swatches you already hold
  • Questions customers ask about shade on Instagram and WhatsApp
  • Reviews that mention shade, oiliness or wear
  • Your retailer and marketplace listings for foundation and concealer

Selling in India and abroad

Selling face makeup beyond your own market.

Where you sell decides sizes, units, seasons and returns. We work from Bengaluru and have no overseas office, so for a new country we start from your own sales and the platforms you already use.

  1. Depth range for other markets

Gulf and African buyers look for deeper shades and warm undertones, and UK buyers look for a wide fair range. Review your range against the market before listing.

  2. Labelling of face products

Cosmetics labelling and sun-protection claims on a tinted base are regulated differently in each country. Your adviser confirms them before a listing is written.

FAQ

Questions about selling face makeup online.

How can I cut returns on foundation shades?
Make the shade the first choice and help the buyer make it: a shade finder, swatches on skin like theirs and a note on which shades are most often confused. Track returns by shade and fix the shades that fail, not the whole range.
Should I sell sample sizes of foundation?
If your margins allow, yes. A small size at a low price lets a buyer find the shade before a full-size order. It also gives you the name and number of a buyer who has already tried you.
Can I say a foundation controls oil all day?
We would say what testing you have, in your words, such as a user trial with a stated number of participants. A broad claim about oil control needs to be backed and approved by your adviser.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped in the free audit and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after the audit, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
Fixes to reply time, follow-up and your Google Business Profile are the quickest to show, because the enquiries already exist. Ads can follow soon after follow-up is in place. SEO and content take longer. How long each takes depends on your business, and the audit tells you which applies to you. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you meet on the audit call. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
For the audit, last month's enquiries in any format and 90 minutes with whoever handles them. After that, access to the accounts the work touches, such as the website, Google Business Profile or CRM, and time for the review meetings.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.

Why us

Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.

  • Marketing and sales, as one job

Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.

  • The person on the first call does the work

No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.

  • A baseline before anything starts

Your numbers are written down on day one, so every later report compares against something honest.

  • The fee in writing, split three ways

Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.

  • No guarantees we cannot keep

The term is agreed in writing and never a default twelve months. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.

  • One office, and we say so

Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. We work across India by call and WhatsApp and travel when a session needs to be in person.
