Bicycle buyers and the assembly question: how to sell a cycle that arrives in a box
Someone ordering a cycle online is really deciding who will fit the handlebar, set the brakes and mend the first puncture. Say who assembles it in their pin code, script the delivery, and stock the parts.

On this page
Someone comparing cycles on your site may not be stuck on the frame or the gears at all. He is wondering who will fit the handlebar, who will set the brakes, and where he will go after the first puncture. A cycle that arrives in a box sells when the page answers that. Say what comes fitted, what is left to do, who finishes it in his pin code, and where the first service and the next tube come from. The frame and the price bring him to the page. The promise about after delivery gets the order.
What the buyer is actually worried about
The box arrives with the handlebar turned sideways, the front wheel strapped to the frame and the pedals in a plastic bag. Plenty of adults have not held a spanner since school. And the part that matters most, the brakes, is one a first-timer can easily set wrong.
Then there is the left pedal. It has a reverse thread, so a buyer who screws it in the usual way can strip the thread in the crank. That one mistake can turn a sound cycle into a "poor quality" review.
The later worries are about ownership. What size of tube will I need? Who adjusts the gears when they start to slip? If your page cannot answer those, the buyer walks to the cycle shop down the road, where the mechanic is standing beside the cycle.
Decide your assembly promise pin code by pin code
You cannot make the same promise everywhere, so do not try. Sort your delivery pin codes into three groups, and when the buyer enters a pin code on the product page, show the promise for that group.
- Your own mechanic or a partner shop covers the area. Assembly at home or at the shop is included in the price, and the first check happens at the same place.
- A local cycle shop has agreed to finish it. The shop's name and number go into the delivery message, and a printed card in the box lists what the mechanic should check.
- Nobody covers the area yet. Say so plainly. Offer a guided video call for single-speed and children's cycles, and hold back geared and disc-brake models until you have someone there.
Signing up and paying partner shops works much as it does for tyres, set out in selling tyres with a local fitting partner. A cycle shop has its own reason to agree: riders return to the shop that set up their cycle, as how bike workshops get riders to return shows from the workshop's side.
The messages, from dispatch to the first check
Send these on WhatsApp only to buyers who agreed to messages at checkout, and keep within the platform's current rules on templates. The wording is a starting point.
The day before dispatch. "Your cycle leaves our warehouse tomorrow. The handlebar, pedals and front wheel need fitting. In your area, [shop name] will fit them and set the brakes. Reply 1 for home assembly on [date], 2 to take it to the shop, or 3 to fit it yourself with our video."
On delivery. "Your cycle has arrived. One thing before you start: the left pedal tightens the opposite way to the right. Here is the video. Please do not ride until both brakes have been checked."
The day after assembly. "Is everything working? Squeeze both brakes hard, then send us a photo of the front wheel from the side. If anything rubs or slips, reply here and we will arrange a visit."
A few weeks in. "New cables stretch a little in the first rides, so the brakes and gears may need a small adjustment. Your first check is at [shop]. Pick a time here."
When the first puncture is likely. "Your tyre size is [size printed on the sidewall]. Tubes, tyres and brake pads for your model are on this page."
That last message turns a cycle sale into a parts customer. Keep the consumables for each model you sell (tubes, tyres, brake pads, a chain) on one page per model, and print the tyre size on the card in the box as well.
On the product page, show any certification mark on the cycle or its parts as printed, and name the standard only if the maker states it. Which marks a bicycle needs differs by kind of cycle and sale, so check with the BIS or your own adviser before you write a safety claim.
Imagine a Ludhiana maker selling to Bengaluru
Imagine a bicycle maker in Ludhiana selling its own geared hybrid cycles direct to buyers in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. The product page is strong on frame, gears and price, and says "easy home assembly". The reviews start to say "brakes don't work" and "gears jump". The cycles are fine. The buyers assembled them with an online video and a borrowed spanner.
Assembly had been left to the buyer and a footnote. So the maker picks up the phone. It calls cycle shops in the three cities and agrees a rate for assembly and the first check with two shops in each. The product page shows the right shop for the buyer's pin code. The box carries a card with the shop's name and the left-pedal warning, and the messages above go out from dispatch. Where no shop has agreed yet, the page offers single-speed models only, and says why.
Assembly now sits inside the price. In this invented case it adds about ₹600 a cycle in partner-shop fees, the maker absorbs half of it and raises prices by the rest, and the cities with no partner shop yet still get single-speed models only. Brake and gear complaints fall, though not to zero.
When this is more than you need
If you sell only children's cycles with stabilisers, a clear video and a printed sheet will do; skip the partner network. If you send only a handful of cycles a season into a city, a partner shop will not take the work seriously. Offer the video call there, and say on the page what it is. And if your buyers are mostly riders who already own tools, a short assembly note and a torque chart from the maker matter more to them than a mechanic's visit.
Pick the city you ship most cycles to and ring three cycle shops there before you change anything else. Cycles are one shelf of the sports and outdoor categories under e-commerce sales and marketing. If you want the pin code promise, the shop partners and the post-sale messages planned for your cities, customer onboarding is the service, and tell us what you need is the first step.
