Local SEO checklist for businesses in India

A practical checklist for the map result: profile completeness, Indian address formats, reviews and consistent details everywhere you are listed.

A lamplighter's round on a shuttered street: one cast-iron lamp lit, a short ladder lifting away from its bar, and three dark lamps receding down the pavement

Local search is decided by three things: whether your Google Business Profile is complete and active, whether your business details are identical everywhere they appear, and whether you have more recent, answered reviews than the businesses nearby. Everything else on this checklist supports those three. Work through it in order, because the profile and the reviews affect the map result within weeks, while pages and links take months.

The profile, done properly

  • Claim and verify the profile, and keep the login with the owner rather than with a former agency.
  • Use the exact registered or trading name. No city names or keywords added to it, which is a violation that gets listings suspended.
  • Pick the most specific primary category available, then add secondary categories. A clinic is "Dental clinic", not "Doctor".
  • Enter the address in the format Indian buyers and delivery partners actually use: shop or floor number, building name, street, locality, city, pin code. Add the landmark in the description rather than in the address line.
  • Drop the map pin on the actual entrance, not the middle of the building or the road outside.
  • Set real opening hours, including Saturday, and mark the holidays you close for. An "open now" status that is wrong costs you the call and earns a poor review.
  • Add the primary phone number that a person answers, and a WhatsApp number where the platform allows it.
  • Write the description in plain words: what you do, for whom, in which areas, with the locality named once.
  • Upload at least fifteen photographs: the exterior with the signboard visible, the entrance, the interior, the team, the work, the parking. Add a few every month.
  • Add products or services with prices or ranges where you can.
  • Answer the questions in the Q and A section yourself, starting with the questions your phone gets most.
  • Post an update every two or three weeks. An inactive profile slips behind an active competitor.

Details that must match everywhere

WhereWhat to checkCommon error in India
Website footer and contact pageName, address, phone, hoursOld landline, or a different address from the profile
Google Business ProfileAll of the above, plus categoriesKeywords added to the business name
JustDial and SulekhaName, address, phone, categoryTwo or three duplicate listings from years ago
IndiaMART and TradeIndiaRegistered name, GST, addressTrading name on one, registered name on the other
Facebook and InstagramAddress, hours, phone, website linkA dead website link or a personal profile instead of a page
Practo, Zomato, Swiggy and similar platformsAddress, timings, contactTimings that were never updated after a change
Your invoices and GST registrationRegistered name and addressAn address that does not match the profile, which blocks verification

Duplicate and abandoned listings are the most common problem we find. One business, three JustDial entries with three different mobile numbers, and reviews spread across all of them. Claim or close the duplicates before doing anything else.

Reviews, as a routine rather than a campaign

Reviews influence both the ranking and the click. Build a routine instead of a drive.

Ask every satisfied customer, in person or on WhatsApp, with a short link. Ask on the day of the service, not a week later. Reply to every review, positive and negative, from a named person, within a few days. In the reply to a good review, mention the service and the locality naturally, because that text is indexed. Never buy reviews, and never post them from office devices, which is detectable and costs you the listing.

A negative review answered calmly and specifically does more for a new buyer than the absence of negative reviews, which nobody believes anyway.

Pages on your own site

  • One page per service, named for what people search rather than for your internal terminology.
  • One page per locality you genuinely serve, with landmarks, travel time, and examples of work done there.
  • The name, address and phone in the footer of every page as text rather than inside an image.
  • A Google Map embed on the contact page.
  • Local business structured data with the address, hours and phone, matching the profile exactly.
  • The site loading in under three seconds on a 4G phone connection, because that is how almost all local searches happen.
  • A click-to-call button and a WhatsApp button visible without scrolling on mobile.

A worked example

For example, imagine a car service garage in Kengeri, Bengaluru, competing with a dozen workshops and two authorised service centres nearby. The details and figures below are illustrative. It cannot outrank the authorised centres for brand searches, so the opportunity is in specific work and specific areas: "clutch replacement Kengeri", "car AC repair Rajarajeshwari Nagar", "insurance claim car repair Bengaluru west".

The order of work starts with the profile: fifteen photographs of actual jobs and the correct pin. Next comes a routine of asking every customer for a review when they collect the car. Then a page for each of the six jobs that bring the most revenue, and one locality page each for Kengeri, RR Nagar and Uttarahalli with genuine detail. An illustrative outcome to plan for is calls from the map result rising over two to three months while the locality pages start contributing from about the fourth month.

What to do next

Search your own main service with your locality name on a phone, in incognito mode. Write down who appears above you and what their profiles have that yours does not. Then check the seven places in the table above for mismatched details. That is usually two hours of work and produces a list you can act on immediately. Questions

Questions owners ask.

How long does local SEO take to show results?
Profile and review work shows movement in four to eight weeks because the map result updates quickly. Locality pages and links take three to six months. If somebody promises a top map position in two weeks, they are either bidding on ads or about to break something.
Do we need a separate page for every area we serve?
Only for areas where you genuinely operate and can say something specific. Twenty identical pages with the locality name swapped are treated as spam and often pull the whole site down. Three real pages with landmarks, travel times and local projects work better than twenty fake ones.
Can we rank on Maps without a physical address?
A service area business can appear without showing the address, provided you verify the profile and set the service areas correctly. You cannot rank for a locality you have no presence in, and using a friend's shop address in another area is the fastest way to lose the listing entirely.
Do JustDial and IndiaMART listings help our own ranking?
Indirectly, by confirming your name, address and phone number in more places, which is one of the things search engines and AI assistants check. Their main value is the enquiries they send. Keep the details identical to your Google profile or the confirmation works against you.
