Weekends sell out and weekdays sit empty: offers that fill the week in Puducherry

Weekday rooms in Puducherry stay empty because guests have jobs, not because the rate is high. Give a weekday reason, such as a longer stay or a package, and tell past guests directly.

Every Friday evening the cars come down the East Coast Road from Chennai, and by Saturday noon you are turning guests away. On Tuesday, most of the rooms are empty. The weekday rooms are empty because your guests have jobs, not because the rate is too high. What fills a Tuesday is a reason to come midweek, made for someone who is free then and sent first to people who have stayed with you before. A lower rate on the booking apps is the last thing to try, not the first.

Who is actually free on a Wednesday?

Start from the guest, not the room. The Chennai and Bengaluru families who fill your weekends cannot come on a Wednesday, whatever you charge. Other people can:

  • Remote workers from Chennai's IT corridor and from Bengaluru, who can work from a verandah if the Wi-Fi holds a video call.
  • Retired couples, often the parents of your weekend guests, who prefer a quiet town to a crowded one.
  • Small teams from Chennai offices wanting two days away together, within a drive.
  • Auroville visitors who need several days and a base nearby.

Each wants something different from a weekday stay, and a discount is not what any of them is asking for. More on the town is on our Puducherry page.

Five weekday offers, and when each one is wrong

Notice what is missing: a flat weekday discount. It tells nobody why to come, and it teaches weekend guests to ask for the Tuesday price.

Tell the people who already know you

Guests who stayed once are the cheapest weekday bookings you will get, because they already know the rooms.

Go through your register and pull out three groups. First, anyone who ever stayed on a weekday. Second, guests from Chennai who came more than once. Third, anyone who asked about a long stay and did not book. Use only numbers guests gave you directly, and check each booking app's current rules before contacting a guest who booked through it.

Send each group the one offer that fits them, with the dates it covers and a WhatsApp number to book on. If your list runs into hundreds, WhatsApp marketing and automation handles the sending, and customer reactivation plans how those past guests are brought back.

For example: a beach-side hotel north of town

Imagine a ten-room hotel just off the East Coast Road north of Puducherry, a short walk from the beach. The details are illustrative.

The owner dropped the weekday rate on both booking apps. Some Tuesdays filled. But the new guests bargained further at the desk, and two of them left reviews about the Wi-Fi dropping on calls. Then a Saturday guest asked why the room cost more than it had for the guest who left on Friday. Weekday rooms were fuller and the property earned less.

So he put the rate back. He tested the Wi-Fi in every room and found that four rooms held a video call and six did not. Those four became the work-week rooms, each with a proper desk and a lamp. He wrote one offer: Sunday night to Thursday morning, early breakfast, and the desk. One of the owner's family sent it on WhatsApp to past guests from Chennai and Bengaluru who had stayed twice. For the retired couples on the list, the message was about the ground-floor rooms and the quiet beach on a weekday morning, and said nothing about desks.

The first weekday bookings came from that list, not from the apps. At check-in, the desk asked each guest which message had brought them, so the owner could see which offer to keep.

Where advertising fits

Not for the long weekends. If Christmas, New Year and the long weekends already fill, ads only bid against every other property. If you spend, spend on the weekday offer, shown to office workers in Chennai and Bengaluru and to people booking for their parents.

The exception is an event you sell by date, such as a New Year dinner on the terrace or a block of rooms for a wedding. There the date is the product, so a short burst of festive and seasonal advertising, booked well ahead of the date, earns its place.

When to leave the weekdays alone

If your weekdays are empty only in the hot months, you have an off-season problem, not a weekday one, and it needs its own plan. If you run a small place with your family, the quiet days may be the only time the painter can come in. Protecting a full weekend can be worth more than a half-full Tuesday.

The turf owners' version of this problem shows the same idea in a very different trade.

Test the Wi-Fi in every room before you write the offer

Use a real video call. Make it at noon, from the desk or bed where a guest would sit. Rooms that pass can carry the work-week offer; rooms that fail cannot, whatever the router box says. Then count the past guests in your register who ever stayed on a weekday. A handful of names means one message to them; none means the retired-couples offer may suit you better. If you want the offer written and the past-guest messages set up, tell us what you need.

Questions

Questions owners ask.

Should the weekday offer be on the booking apps too?
You can list a longer-stay rate there, but keep the packages that need a conversation, such as an offsite or a parents' stay, for direct enquiries. Those guests have questions before they book, and the apps are a poor place to answer them. Check each app's current rules before you change rates.
How do I find remote workers who might come midweek?
Start with your own register: guests from Chennai and Bengaluru who arrived on a Thursday or stayed into Monday are already working from your rooms. Ask them, and ask them to forward the offer to colleagues. A short reel of the desk and the verandah at noon reaches the rest.
Is a weekday offer worth it for a four-room homestay?
Only if the quiet days are not the days you need for rest, repairs and the family. A small place that is full every weekend may earn more by protecting those weekends and doing nothing midweek. Fill weekdays because you want to, not because an empty room feels wrong.
