A pen sells on how it writes, and nobody can test that on a product page.

Among writing instruments, a pen is bought by the tip. Fine, medium or broad, 0.5 or 0.7, gel, ball or fountain, and the buyer who knows what they want types exactly that into the search bar. The buyer who does not know picks the one with the review that says it writes smoothly.

A 90-minute audit call and a written, scored report. Turnaround, reporting and term are agreed in writing after the audit.

In one paragraph

Writing instruments online are pens, pencils, markers, highlighters and fountain pens with their refills, inks and cartridges, bought on how the tip writes and whether the refill can be found again. GullySales works on how your listings describe point size and ink, how refill compatibility is shown, and how a pen buyer comes back for the cartridges.

The money is often in what comes after: the refill, the cartridge, the bottle of ink. A pen sold once and never refilled is a sale lost.

Who it is for

This is written for you if you sell writing instruments online.

  • Brands selling gel, ball and roller pens in sets, with or without a refill range
  • Fountain pen sellers and importers with nibs, converters, cartridges and bottled ink
  • Sellers of markers, highlighters and brush pens for students and artists
  • Executive and gift pen sellers who do engraved orders for offices and weddings

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • Sellers of unbranded bulk ball pens who win only on a price per piece
  • Anyone importing a fountain pen brand without stock of its cartridges or an after-sales answer

How buyers choose

What decides the sale of writing instruments.

  1. Tip size and ink type

0.5 or 0.7 mm, ball, gel or roller, and for fountain pens the nib in fine, medium or broad. This is the whole search. A listing that only says smooth writing gets passed over.

  2. Refills and cartridges

Whether the pen takes a standard refill, a branded cartridge or a converter for bottled ink. The buyer checks this before the pen goes into the basket.

  3. Ink, colour and drying

Colour swatches, how fast it dries, and whether it smudges for left-handed writers. Ink buyers for fountain pens ask about shading and waterproofing.

  4. Sets, gifting and engraving

A pen with a box and a name on it is a gift to a teacher or a colleague. Engraving time and the proof the buyer approves decide whether it arrives before the occasion.

Where sales are lost

What usually goes wrong when you sell writing instruments online.

In the words sellers use on the first call.

  • “People bought the pen and cannot find the refill”

They searched for the refill by pen name, found a different one and gave a low review. The pen was fine.

  • “Fountain pen buyers ask questions we cannot answer on the page”

Which nib for which paper, which ink for which pen. Without an answer, a first-time buyer leaves for the seller with a guide.

  • “The set sells at Diwali and then goes quiet”

Corporate and gift orders come in a rush, and the rest of the year the executive pen range sits with no campaign.

What we do

What you get for writing instruments.

Each deliverable and what it is there to change.

  1. A refill and cartridge finder

A table by pen model that points to the correct refill, so a buyer is not left guessing and the support queue shrinks.

  2. A stroke-sample image for every pen

A scanned line of each tip and ink on white paper at actual size.

  3. An ink swatch and shading guide

For bottled and cartridge ink, with flow, drying and waterproofing described in plain words.

  4. An engraving and gifting page

Lettering options, proof approval and a last order date for each occasion.

How the result is measured

  • Purchases
  • Conversion rate
  • Customer acquisition cost
  • Repeat purchase rate
  • Return rate
  • Refill and ink sales per pen sold

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

How it works

From your first message to the first report.

No open-ended retainer. Every step gives you something in writing.

  1. First

    Free audit call

90 minutes with whoever handles your enquiries: how they arrive, how fast they are answered, where they are lost.

  2. After the call

    Written, scored report

Six areas scored, fixes ranked by return and cost. If you want our help, the scope, the fee and the reporting come with it, in writing.

  3. Before work starts

    Baseline recorded

Enquiries by source, reply time, conversion and cost per order, written down so every later report has an honest comparison.

  4. After the baseline

    The first fix goes live

Usually the cheapest one on the report: reply time, a follow-up sequence or the marketing-to-sales handover.

  5. As agreed

    Report against the baseline

What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words. How often you get it is set in writing before work starts.

  6. At renewal

    Renew on the numbers

The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. The length is agreed in writing before anything starts.

What we need from you

What to have ready before the audit call.

None of it has to be tidy. We read what you have.

  • A list of your pens with their compatible refills
  • The refill and cartridge sales against pen sales
  • Questions customers ask about nibs, ink and fitting
  • Corporate and gift order enquiries from the last season
  • Your store and marketplace links

Selling in India and abroad

Selling writing instruments beyond your own market.

Where you sell decides sizes, units, seasons and returns. We work from Bengaluru and have no overseas office, so for a new country we start from your own sales and the platforms you already use.

  1. Ink and liquids in parcels

Bottled ink and liquid markers are carried under different shipping rules by couriers and airlines. Which carriers take them to which country is confirmed before you list them.

  2. Fountain pen buyers online

Collectors abroad read reviews and forums closely before they order a pen or an ink. Etsy and your own store are the usual places to sell to them. Start from the countries that already order.

FAQ

Questions about selling writing instruments online.

Not here? More answers, or ask on WhatsApp.

How do I get people to buy refills and not a new pen?
Make the right refill easy to find from the pen's own page and from the message you send after the order. Buyers lose the refill name quickly, so the pen model and the refill code have to sit together.
Can I sell fountain pens without being an expert?
You can, if the page does the explaining: nib sizes, how to fill, which ink suits. Buyers of a first fountain pen are looking for exactly that help, and the seller who gives it gets the order.
Is it worth offering engraving?
For executive and gift pens, yes. It changes the pen from a stock item to a present for a named person. But it adds time, so say the last date to order for each occasion.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped in the free audit and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after the audit, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
Fixes to reply time, follow-up and your Google Business Profile are the quickest to show, because the enquiries already exist. Ads can follow soon after follow-up is in place. SEO and content take longer. How long each takes depends on your business, and the audit tells you which applies to you. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you meet on the audit call. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
For the audit, last month's enquiries in any format and 90 minutes with whoever handles them. After that, access to the accounts the work touches, such as the website, Google Business Profile or CRM, and time for the review meetings.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.

Why us

Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.

  • Marketing and sales, as one job

Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.

  • The person on the first call does the work

No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.

  • A baseline before anything starts

Your numbers are written down on day one, so every later report compares against something honest.

  • The fee in writing, split three ways

Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.

  • No guarantees we cannot keep

The term is agreed in writing and never a default twelve months. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.

  • One office, and we say so

Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. We work across India by call and WhatsApp and travel when a session needs to be in person.
