Online education and EdTech companies · Referral marketing

Let one happy learner bring in a colleague, and record who sent whom.

Referral marketing for an EdTech company means making it easy for past learners, parents, teachers and employers to recommend a course, then recording who sent each enquiry. Referred learners arrive with trust but still compare. GullySales sets up the ask, the share material and the source record.

Scope, fee, reporting and term are agreed in writing after we have read your brief and spoken to you.

What referral marketing means

Referral marketing is asking an existing customer to recommend you to someone they know, usually with a reward for both sides. It differs from a loyalty scheme because it brings in a new customer rather than a repeat purchase. GullySales builds the ask and the reward into a point where a customer is already satisfied.

For online education and EdTech companies

Where it usually goes wrong, and what we would do.

  • “Alumni are never asked”

Learners finish a course, get the certificate and hear nothing. The best moment to ask for a referral passes within days.

  • “A referral link nobody tracks”

A discount code on a poster does not say who sent the student. Without that, the best advocates are never thanked.

  • “Rewards that break the rules”

A cash reward to a minor or a gift for a review is risky. The reward must fit the platform's rules and your own.

What we do

What we deliver for online education and EdTech companies.

Every deliverable, what it covers for you, and the result it is there to produce. Nothing here is an extra.

  1. A referral ask at the end of a module

A short message to a learner who finished a module or cleared a test, with a plain way to recommend a friend.

Result: The ask arrives when the learner feels good.

  2. A parent-to-parent sharing kit

A one-page summary of the course, a demo link and a short message a parent can forward on a school group.

Result: A parent can pass on the course in one tap.

  3. A tracked referral record

Each referred enquiry logged with the name of the person who sent it and the course it led to.

Result: You know whom to thank.

  4. An outreach note for teachers and college contacts

A short guide for school teachers, professors and placement cell heads on what you teach and who it suits.

Result: A teacher can recommend you without guessing.

  5. A thank-you rule that stays within the rules

A fixed way to thank a referrer, such as a credit on a later course, that fits platform and consumer rules.

Result: Referrers are recognised in the same way every time.

How the result is measured

  • Referrals received
  • Referral conversion rate
  • Cost per referred customer

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

How referrals work in this trade

Know where your referrals come from, and what each source needs from you.

Record the source on every enquiry. A referral you cannot trace cannot be thanked or repeated.

Past learners and alumni
Ask when a learner completes a module or a project, not months later. Give a link that carries their name, so you can see who sent each enquiry and reply to them as well.
Parents of current students
Parents talk on school and society groups. Give them a short, accurate message and the demo link to forward. Ask after a parent-teacher update, when they are pleased.
School teachers and tuition mentors
Teachers recommend to students who need extra help. Send a short note on what you teach and which learner it suits. Do not pay a teacher for a student if their school or institute forbids it.
College professors and placement cells
Offer a free session for their students, with attendance recorded. They will refer the course only if they have seen a lesson, so send the sample before the brochure.
Employers, HR and L&D heads
A manager who sees a team member improve recommends the course to peers. Ask the learner to introduce you to their L&D head, and prepare a one-page pilot outline.
What never to do
Do not pay a learner for a review or send messages to a classmate's contacts taken from a phone. Do not push minors to refer. Keep the consent record and stay within platform rules.

Who it is for

This is written for these online education and EdTech companies.

  • Test-prep and exam coaching platforms (JEE, NEET, UPSC, banking, CA)
  • K-12 live tutoring and doubt-solving apps
  • Upskilling and job-oriented course providers
  • Coding and data bootcamps
  • Spoken English and language-learning apps
  • Corporate training and L&D providers
  • Skill and vocational course platforms
  • Learning management system and school software vendors
  • Hybrid providers with both online batches and a learning centre

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • Enrolled learners are still complaining about refunds or class quality, so asking them to refer a friend would spread the complaint.
  • You cannot record who referred whom, so any thanks or reward would turn into an argument at the fee counter.

How it works

How the referral marketing work runs

The work itself, in order. How an engagement starts, from your brief to a written scope, is set out on our method page.

  1. 1

Read the margin and the relationship

We work out what a new customer is worth and what you can pay to get one, then check whether customers know others like themselves.

  2. 2

Find the referrals you already get

Your invoices, call notes and WhatsApp threads show who already sends people to you, and who they are. That sets the starting point and the first people to ask.

  3. 3

Write the offer and the rules

The reward, the definition of a valid referral and the payout steps are agreed in writing before anything is shown to customers.

  4. 4

Build the share path and the record

The message, the link or code and the referral sheet are built. Your team tests a referral end to end, from forward to reward.

  5. 5

Start with your best customers, then widen

The first asks go to people who have already praised you. What they say about the offer decides what changes before it reaches the wider base.

Where this fits

Three pieces of sales work, in this order.

This work sits inside sales process design, at stage 7, after the sale. The audit comes before it, and sales management keeps it running.

  1. Step 1

    Sales audit

Find where deals are being lost and what to fix first.

Start here if you cannot say where orders are lost.

  2. Step 2 · you are here

    Sales process design

One written way to sell, from first enquiry to repeat order.

Start here if every salesperson sells differently.

  3. Step 3

    Sales management

A target, a review routine and someone who owns the number.

Start here if the team has targets and no routine.

FAQ

Questions owners ask before they call.

Is it fine to reward a learner for a referral?
A small credit on a later course is common and fine when the rules are written and applied equally. Do not pay for reviews, and do not offer cash to minors. Check consumer and platform rules with your adviser.
How do we track who sent whom?
Give each referrer a code or a link and ask the new enquiry, on the demo form, who told them about you. Put the answer in the enquiry record. Some people forget, so also ask the counsellor to confirm on the call.
Can we ask a teacher or professor to refer students?
You can offer them a free session and a sample, and let them decide. Do not offer money for each student unless the school allows it in writing. A recommendation that looks bought can hurt the teacher and you.
How often is too often to ask for a referral?
Ask once at a good moment, such as after a module or a result the learner is proud of, and once more after a course ends. If someone declines, record it and do not ask again for that course.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped after we have read your brief and spoken to you, and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after we have spoken, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
It depends on the trade, the channel and what is already in place. After we have read your brief and spoken to you, we say what we would expect to move first and how it will be measured against the baseline. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you speak to before anything starts. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
Your brief, and a conversation. After that, access to whatever this work touches, such as your website, your accounts or your enquiry record, and time with the people who handle your enquiries.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.
