Optical businesses · Referral marketing

The family that tests together is the referral you already have.

Referrals for an optical shop come from the household, the school and the office as much as from a happy customer. GullySales builds the ask into the visit, prepares what a teacher or an HR manager can pass on, and sets out where paying for an introduction is not appropriate.

Scope, fee, reporting and term are agreed in writing after we have read your brief and spoken to you.

What referral marketing means

Referral marketing is asking an existing customer to recommend you to someone they know, usually with a reward for both sides. It differs from a loyalty scheme because it brings in a new customer rather than a repeat purchase. GullySales builds the ask and the reward into a point where a customer is already satisfied.

Last updated 5 Oct 2026. Rules for this trade differ by state and professional body, and they change. We describe restrictions in general terms, so check the current position with your own council or adviser before you publish anything.

For optical businesses

Where it usually goes wrong, and what we would do.

  • “The referral is sitting at home in the same house”

A customer who trusts your optometrist has a spouse, a parent and a child with untested eyes. It is the easiest introduction in retail, and most shops never make it.

  • “A teacher refers by habit, not by scheme”

The teacher who notices a child squinting tells the parent to get it checked and names a shop. Run one screening properly and you become that name.

  • “Paying a clinician for patients is a different question entirely”

Rewarding your own customers is ordinary retail practice. An arrangement with an ophthalmologist or a clinic is not, the rules on it differ and change, and you should take advice from your council or your own legal adviser before offering anything.

What we do

What we deliver for optical businesses.

Every deliverable, what it covers for you, and the result it is there to produce. Nothing here is an extra.

  1. A household ask made at the test

A practised question at the end of a visit about who else at home has not been checked, with the appointment offered there and then.

Result: One test books the rest of the family.

  2. A reward that fits a purchase made every few years

A discount on lenses or a free spare pair for the referrer rather than points, structured so both sides gain on their next visit.

Result: The reward is worth something to somebody who buys rarely.

  3. A school screening offer the head teacher can approve

A written proposal for a check-up camp covering what is screened, what parents are told, and how findings are passed on.

Result: You become the shop the school mentions to parents.

  4. A corporate eye check offer for nearby offices

A note for an HR or admin manager covering a screening day for staff and what employees get afterwards.

Result: One conversation brings a floor of screen users through the door.

  5. Referral source recorded on every new customer

Each new record tagged with the person, school or office that sent them, followed through to the purchase.

Result: You can see which relationship actually produces customers.

  6. A written position on clinical referral arrangements

A short internal note on what the shop will and will not offer to doctors and clinics, written after you have taken your own professional advice.

Result: Nobody offers something at the counter that should never have been offered.

  7. Referred customers read against the baseline

Referrals received, what share tested and bought, and what they were worth, set beside the baseline recorded before work started.

Result: You can tell whether the camps and the household ask earn their time.

How the result is measured

  • Referrals received
  • Referral conversion rate
  • Cost per referred customer

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

How referrals reach an optical shop

A pair of glasses is worn by one person but bought on advice from a family.

The parent who brought a child for a test
Ask at the counter whether anyone else at home has not had an eye test. A grandmother with an old prescription is a visit you only get if somebody names her.
The class teacher or head teacher
A teacher sees the child squinting at the board. Give her a short note on what to look for and where to send the family, and let her choose whether your shop appears on it.
The HR manager of an office nearby
An office with many screen users has employees overdue for a test. Offer a short eye check at the premises, with your optometrist, and let the HR manager decide who to invite.
The ophthalmologist or eye clinic nearby
A prescription belongs to the patient, who may take it to any shop. Introduce your optometrist and your frame range to the clinic, and let patients choose without being steered.
Your own customer record
Record the name of whoever referred each new customer when the prescription is written. Frames are bought every few years, so the source matters more than the first sale.
What never to do
Never pay a clinician, clinic staff, a school or a teacher for steering patients or pupils to you. Rules for the eye professions differ by state and body, so check with your own council.

How it works

From your first message to the first report.

No open-ended retainer. Every step gives you something in writing.

  1. First

    Your brief

You tell us what you need in a few short steps: your business, what you want, where enquiries come from and how they are handled.

  2. After the brief

A conversation and a written scope

We read it, then talk with whoever handles your enquiries. If you want our help, the scope, the fee and the reporting come in writing, and nothing starts before you have read them.

  3. Before work starts

    Baseline recorded

The numbers this work is meant to move, such as enquiries, quotations, orders, visits or renewals, written down so every later report has an honest comparison.

  4. After the baseline

    The first fix goes live

The fix we agreed to start with is put in place and measured against the baseline, whether that is a reply, a follow-up, a page, a listing or the handover between marketing and sales.

  5. As agreed

    Report against the baseline

What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words. How often you get it is set in writing before work starts.

  6. At renewal

    Renew on the numbers

The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. The length is agreed in writing before anything starts.

How the referral marketing work runs

  1. 1

Understand your margin and customer relationship

We agree what reward is genuinely sustainable and appropriate for your business and customer type.

  2. 2

    Audit existing informal referrals

We check how much word of mouth already happens, to size expectations for the formal programme realistically.

  3. 3

    Design the offer and mechanism

A specific reward and an easy sharing method are built and tested.

  4. 4

    Implement and promote

The programme is surfaced at the right moments in your customer journey.

  5. 5

    Measure and adjust

We track referrals and conversions, adjusting the reward or promotion if uptake is low.

Why us

Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.

  • Marketing and sales, as one job

Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.

  • The person on the first call does the work

No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.

  • A baseline before anything starts

Your numbers are written down on day one, so every later report compares against something honest.

  • The fee in writing, split three ways

Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.

  • No guarantees we cannot keep

The term is agreed in writing and never a default twelve months. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.

  • One office, and we say so

Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. We work across India by call and WhatsApp and travel when a session needs to be in person.

#257, 3rd floor, Sri Nanjundeshwara Complex, Nagarbhavi 8th Block, Outer Ring Road. How we work.

FAQ

Questions owners ask before they call.

Not here? More answers, or ask on WhatsApp.

Can we pay an eye doctor for sending us patients?
Treat that as a question for your professional body and your own legal adviser, not for a marketing firm. Arrangements involving clinicians are restricted in several ways and the position differs and changes. A referral scheme between you and your own customers is a separate matter.
What reward actually works for an optical customer?
Something worth having at a purchase made every couple of years. A meaningful discount on lenses, a free spare pair, or a free test for the person referred. Small percentages off a frame get ignored.
Is a school eye camp worth doing as a referral route?
It can be, if the head teacher agrees and parents are told in writing what happens to the results. Record which families come to the shop afterwards. Do not sell frames at the school, and send findings only to parents.
How do we record referrals when one family has several accounts?
Give each family a single household reference and link each person's prescription to it. When someone new arrives on a relative's word, note the relative's name in the first record. That makes the household, not the individual, the unit.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped after we have read your brief and spoken to you, and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after we have spoken, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
It depends on the trade, the channel and what is already in place. After we have read your brief and spoken to you, we say what we would expect to move first and how it will be measured against the baseline. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you speak to before anything starts. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
Your brief, and a conversation. After that, access to whatever this work touches, such as your website, your accounts or your enquiry record, and time with the people who handle your enquiries.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.
