How to get plastic moulding job work and CNC machining orders

Job work orders come to shops that buyers can find, check and trust with a drawing. Here is how moulders and machine shops get on RFQ lists and win repeat orders.

Plastic moulding job work and CNC machining orders go to shops that a buyer can find, check and trust with a drawing. Be visible where sourcing engineers look, and state your machines, capacity and tolerances plainly. Answer each request for quotation (RFQ) within a day or two. Then deliver the first trial batch on time. Most job work shops depend on two or three customers and one person's contacts. The work below turns that into a steady list of buyers who send drawings.

How buyers actually find a job work supplier

Picture a sourcing engineer at an OEM or Tier 1 supplier who needs a new moulded or machined part. They check their supplier list first, then ask colleagues and other suppliers, then search. The search is usually specific, such as "injection moulding job work 250 tonne Bengaluru" or "CNC turning job work stainless steel Pune". If your shop is not on the approved list, the search and the referral are how you get onto it.

Buyers then check you. They look at your website for the machines, materials and industries you serve, a photograph of the shop floor, and the quality checks you run. They may call a current customer. They ask for a sample part or a trial order before anything regular.

Plastic moulding job work: what to say and where

A moulder wins job work by stating what it can mould, not what it is. Put these on your website, your IndiaMART listing and your company profile:

  • Machine tonnage range and number of machines.
  • Materials you mould regularly, such as PP, ABS, nylon, polycarbonate or engineering plastics.
  • Whether you build or maintain moulds in-house, or work with a toolroom.
  • Part size and weight range, and secondary work such as ultrasonic welding, pad printing or assembly.
  • Industries you supply, such as automotive, electrical, appliances or packaging.
  • Minimum batch size and typical lead time for a trial.

A buyer with a part in mind reads this list and decides in a minute whether to send the drawing.

CNC machining RFQ: how to answer so you win

A CNC machining RFQ usually arrives as a drawing, a quantity, a material and a deadline. How you answer decides whether you get the next one.

StepWhat good looks likeWhat loses the order
AcknowledgeSame day, with who will quote and whenSilence until the quote is ready
Check the drawingQuestions about tolerances or finishes raised earlyAssumptions that surface after the order
QuoteUnit price, tooling or fixture cost, lead time, validity, and what is excludedA single number on WhatsApp
Offer a trialA small first batch with an inspection reportAsking for a large first order
Follow upA call after a few days to ask about the decisionWaiting to be told
Record the outcomeWon, lost, price, reasonNo record, so the same mistake repeats

Keep a simple register of every RFQ with its outcome. After a few months it tells you which buyers, part types and materials you win on, and where your price is off. Our proposal development work sets up quote formats buyers can compare quickly.

CNC machine shop marketing that works

CNC machine shop marketing is less about advertising and more about being easy to verify.

A website that answers the buyer's checklist. Machine list with makes and axes, working envelope, tolerances you hold routinely, materials, inspection equipment, and the industries you supply. A page per capability, such as 5-axis milling or Swiss-type turning, is what a search finds. See our website checklist for manufacturers.

A Google Business Profile. Buyers search on Maps for job work near an industrial area. The profile should name the capability, not just the company name.

Vendor registration. Many large buyers run supplier registration on their own portals. Register, keep your documents current, and follow up with the sourcing team by name.

Direct outreach. List the OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers in your region who buy parts like yours. Email and call their sourcing engineers with your capability sheet and a photograph of similar parts. This is slow, steady work.

Trade fairs. Visiting the right regional engineering and plastics shows, with a capability sheet, often produces more serious buyers than exhibiting.

How to get job work orders to repeat

Getting the first order is the hard part. Keeping the customer depends on on-time delivery, first-time-right quality and quick answers when something goes wrong. Send the inspection report with every batch. Tell the buyer about a delay before they find out. Ask for the vendor rating the customer keeps on you, and fix what it shows. A buyer who trusts you sends the next drawing without an RFQ.

What does this look like in practice?

For example, take a moulder in Peenya Industrial Area, Bengaluru, with machines up to a few hundred tonnes and one appliance customer taking most of its output. The details are illustrative. Its website said "quality plastic products" and nothing about tonnage or materials.

It rewrote the website and IndiaMART listing to state tonnage, materials, mould maintenance and the industries it supplied. It built a list of electrical and automotive buyers across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Their sourcing teams each got a one-page capability sheet with photographs of similar parts. Every RFQ went into a register with the outcome and reason. Over the following months it was approved as a vendor by new buyers after trial batches, and its dependence on one customer fell.

What to do next

Write your capability sheet this week: machines, materials, tolerances, batch sizes, industries, quality checks and a contact name. Put it on your website and your listings, and send it to five buyers who should know you. Questions

Questions owners ask.

Is IndiaMART useful for plastic moulding job work?
It brings enquiries, but many are traders, one-off buyers or people comparing on price alone. It is worth keeping a listing that states your machine tonnage, materials and minimum order, and answering fast. Judge it on orders received, not on enquiry count.
How long does it take to get approved as a vendor by an OEM?
It varies widely, often months, because the buyer runs a trial order, checks your quality system and may audit the plant before regular orders begin. Start the process with several buyers at once, and keep sending the sample parts and documents they ask for without being chased.
Should a small machine shop quote on every RFQ it receives?
No. Quote where your machines, tolerances and batch sizes fit, and decline the rest politely and quickly. A shop that quotes everything quotes badly, and a fast, polite no is remembered when the right job comes along.
Do we need ISO certification to get job work orders?
Many OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers ask for a quality management system, and some ask for certification before approving a vendor. Smaller buyers often do not. Check what your target buyers require and state clearly what you hold.
