E-commerce · Books

The reader wants an answer to a question and picks the book that sounds like it has one.

A nonfiction buyer starts with a problem, not a title: how to manage money, how to talk to a teenager, what really happened in 1947. They search for the subject and compare half a dozen books, and the winner is the one that looks most likely to help.

A 90-minute audit call and a written, scored report. Turnaround, reporting and term are agreed in writing after the audit.

In one paragraph

Nonfiction books are the biographies, history, business, self-improvement, health and cookery titles readers buy to learn or to change something in their lives. GullySales writes subject and question-led pages, shows readers what they will learn before they buy and builds the author and topic routes that bring them back for the next one.

So your page is a short argument. Who wrote it and why they can be believed, what is in it, who it is for and what the reader will be able to do after. A shelf of covers with a price does not make that case.

Who it is for

This is written for you if you sell nonfiction online.

  • Booksellers with strong lists in business, history, biography, self-help or cookery
  • Publishers selling a backlist of ideas and subject books on their own site
  • Authors and consultants who sell their book to readers and clients
  • Sellers of reference and coffee-table books bought as gifts

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • A seller who carries a small random mix of titles with no theme. Readers of nonfiction look for depth in a subject, and a scattered shelf shows none.
  • Authors who want the book to sell consulting. That is another service, and we would say so in the audit.

How buyers choose

What decides the sale of nonfiction.

  1. Subject and the question

The search is the topic: books on investing for beginners, Indian history for a general reader, cooking from Karnataka. Each is a page that compares a few books and says which suits whom.

  2. Who wrote it

Readers check the author's background and whether the book is recent. A line on the author's experience is more convincing than a quote from the cover.

  3. Contents, sample and level

They open the table of contents and a few pages to see whether it is for a beginner or an expert, and whether it is a practical book or a thought piece.

  4. Gift or personal use

A biography as a retirement gift, a cookbook for a wedding. Gift buyers want a suggestion, wrapping and a delivery date.

Where sales are lost

What usually goes wrong when you sell nonfiction online.

In the words sellers use on the first call.

  • “Readers choose by the cover and the rating, not by what the book teaches”

A page that says who it is for, what they will learn and what it does not cover helps the right reader stop and the wrong reader go. Both save a return.

  • “Facts date quickly and old editions linger”

A business or tax book from several years ago may be out of date. Show the edition year and the update on each page, and retire superseded editions from the front.

  • “We carry deep lists but the site shows only a grid”

A grid does not say that you stock thirty books on Indian history. Subject pages with a short guide to the list show depth and bring in the specialist.

  • “Readers search for a topic and land on a marketplace”

Topic pages that compare titles, written by someone who has read them, rank for the search and give a reason to buy from you.

What we do

What you get for nonfiction.

Each deliverable and what it is there to change.

  1. A subject guide for each strand

A page per subject comparing the books you carry. It brings in readers who search the topic.

  2. A book page template

A layout with contents, edition, author and sample. It makes every title page more useful than a bare listing.

  3. A superseded-edition list

A note of which editions are out of date and the replacements. It stops an old edition being sold to a buyer who needs the new.

  4. A gift list set

Lists by occasion with prices. It answers the buyer who has no title in mind.

How the result is measured

  • Purchases
  • Conversion rate
  • Average order value
  • Repeat purchase rate
  • Return rate and the reasons given
  • Orders from subject guides

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

How it works

From your first message to the first report.

No open-ended retainer. Every step gives you something in writing.

  1. First

    Free audit call

90 minutes with whoever handles your enquiries: how they arrive, how fast they are answered, where they are lost.

  2. After the call

    Written, scored report

Six areas scored, fixes ranked by return and cost. If you want our help, the scope, the fee and the reporting come with it, in writing.

  3. Before work starts

    Baseline recorded

Enquiries by source, reply time, conversion and cost per order, written down so every later report has an honest comparison.

  4. After the baseline

    The first fix goes live

Usually the cheapest one on the report: reply time, a follow-up sequence or the marketing-to-sales handover.

  5. As agreed

    Report against the baseline

What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words. How often you get it is set in writing before work starts.

  6. At renewal

    Renew on the numbers

The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. The length is agreed in writing before anything starts.

What we need from you

What to have ready before the audit call.

None of it has to be tidy. We read what you have.

  • Your nonfiction list with ISBN, edition year and subject
  • Best-selling titles and the strands where you are strong
  • Publisher permissions for sample chapters
  • Questions readers ask about which book to pick
  • Marketplace and store links

Selling in India and abroad

Selling nonfiction beyond your own market.

Where you sell decides sizes, units, seasons and returns. We work from Bengaluru and have no overseas office, so for a new country we start from your own sales and the platforms you already use.

  1. Indian subjects abroad

History, cookery and biography of Indian subjects are searched overseas. Which countries to try is decided from your own platform data.

  2. Edition rights

Territory limits on editions apply to nonfiction too. Check with the publisher what you may sell abroad.

FAQ

Questions about selling nonfiction online.

How do I write a book page that sells nonfiction?
Say who the book is for, what it covers and what it leaves out. Show the contents and a sample. The author's background and the edition year sit near the top. A reader should know in a minute if it is the right book.
Do subject guides actually bring in buyers?
They do when they answer a question people search. A guide that compares three books on a topic ranks and is quoted, and it sends the reader to a purchase. It takes real reading to write, so we choose subjects you know well.
I sell my own book. Is it different?
Yes, the page must do the author's job, so give your story, the contents, a sample and a way to reach you. We also look at whether the book supports another business of yours and keep the two apart.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped in the free audit and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after the audit, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
Fixes to reply time, follow-up and your Google Business Profile are the quickest to show, because the enquiries already exist. Ads can follow soon after follow-up is in place. SEO and content take longer. How long each takes depends on your business, and the audit tells you which applies to you. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you meet on the audit call. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
For the audit, last month's enquiries in any format and 90 minutes with whoever handles them. After that, access to the accounts the work touches, such as the website, Google Business Profile or CRM, and time for the review meetings.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.

Why us

Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.

  • Marketing and sales, as one job

Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.

  • The person on the first call does the work

No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.

  • A baseline before anything starts

Your numbers are written down on day one, so every later report compares against something honest.

  • The fee in writing, split three ways

Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.

  • No guarantees we cannot keep

The term is agreed in writing and never a default twelve months. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.

  • One office, and we say so

Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. We work across India by call and WhatsApp and travel when a session needs to be in person.
