Be the consultant a sales head calls the week the quarter's target is missed.

The sales head of a Pune-based industrial pump dealer sits in a review where the managing director asks why the last two quarters fell short and the team gives three different answers.

Realistic editorial illustration of business consultants at work in India

In one paragraph

A sales consultant helps a company sell more by fixing its process, team structure, targets and coaching. Marketing puts the consultant in front of the managing director or sales head at the moment a target slips. Selling it means turning one worried call into a paid diagnosis. GullySales builds the small first offer, the proof and the follow-up messages, so the consultant is not relying only on a former employer's contact list.

After the meeting the sales head searches for sales process help, sales training and someone to look at the field team, then rings two people from the old company who have heard of a consultant. A sales consultant who is easy to find, easy to understand and quick to propose a small first piece of work gets that call. A consultant who has written nothing down has to hope a former colleague remembers the name.

How buyers decide

How sales consultants are chosen.

The buyer is the managing director, owner or sales head, and the trigger is a number: a target missed, a salesperson who left with customers, a new product that is not selling, or a distributor network that has gone quiet. Search happens briefly and mostly confirms a name already heard.

Buyers compare consultants on whether they have sold in their kind of market. A consultant who has run a field team for an industrial product is trusted for a dealer business over one who has trained call-centre agents. Buyers also ask whether the consultant will work with the team on the ground or hand over a document.

The decision closes when the consultant proposes something small and concrete, such as a review of the last quarter's pipeline or two weeks riding along with the field team, and the promoter can see what the written reading will cover. A year-long programme quoted after one meeting leaves nothing small enough to approve on the day.

The problem

What usually goes wrong for sales consultants.

What owners tell us on the first call, in their words.

  • “Sales heads call us in a panic and disappear when the quarter recovers”

The work starts at a bad moment and stops as soon as numbers improve, so no engagement runs long enough to change habits.

  • “We are put in the same box as sales trainers”

Buyers think a day's training is the whole offer and compare us on a per-day fee, when the real value is in process and structure.

  • “Our best results belong to clients we cannot name”

Companies do not want competitors to know they hired a sales consultant, so our website shows nothing of what we have changed.

  • “We sell through personal contacts and have no pipeline”

Work comes from the phone book of a former employer and the next quarter's engagements are a guess.

  • “The owner hires us and the team resists”

The managing director wants change and the sales team sees us as a threat, so the work stalls in the first weeks.

  • “We cannot prove that sales improved because we did”

The client's sales went up or down for many reasons and there is no agreed record from before we started.

What we do

What we do for sales consultants.

Everything included for sales consultants.

  1. A pipeline review offer

A defined, small engagement where the consultant reads the last quarter's pipeline and lost deals and gives the sales head a short written reading.

  2. Pages for each trigger

Separate pages for a missed target, high sales attrition, a new product that is not moving and a dealer network that has gone quiet, each describing what the consultant looks at first.

  3. Sample playbooks and templates

Sanitised extracts of call structures, qualification questions, review formats and territory plans, shown to prospects to prove the work is concrete.

  4. Case stories by sales model

Descriptions of the type of company, selling method, problem and change, with names removed unless approved in writing.

  5. A before-the-engagement record

A simple baseline of enquiries, quotes, conversion and order value agreed with the client in the first meeting.

  6. A referral plan with the people who hear first

A list of chartered accountants, investors, HR heads and bankers who learn about a missed target early, each with a reason to introduce you.

  7. A source sheet for every diagnostic

Each conversation, diagnostic and engagement entered with the route it came through, starting from the baseline recorded before work.

How the result is measured

  • Enquiries by source and by trigger
  • Diagnostics sold against enquiries
  • Diagnostics that grew into longer engagements
  • Clients who returned after an engagement ended
  • Introductions received from advisers
  • Days between a first call and a signed scope

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

Worth a page and a campaign of their own

A diagnostic offer a sales head can buy without a board approval · Proof described by sales model, not by client name · Pages for each trigger such as missed target and attrition · Playbooks and templates shown as samples · Relationships with chartered accountants, investors and HR heads who hear first · A plan for staying in touch after a recovery · Work with the team on the ground, shown plainly · A record of sales numbers before the engagement starts

Priority campaigns

Campaigns for what sales consultants most want to sell.

Each one planned around when your buyers decide, and measured against the baseline.

  • Missed-target search campaign

Search ads and a landing page for phrases a sales head types when the numbers fall short, with the pipeline review as the offer.

  • Sales-head roundtable

A small meeting of sales leaders from non-competing companies on one topic, such as incentive plans for a field team, with a written summary afterwards.

  • LinkedIn series from field experience

Short posts from real selling situations, such as a distributor review gone wrong, written in the consultant's voice.

  • Dealer and distributor network note

A short piece for manufacturers on why dealer sales drift, sent to the managing directors of companies that sell through channels.

  • After-the-recovery check-in

A message to past clients once their numbers have recovered, asking how the team is doing and offering a short review of what has held.

Beyond search

Where we reach buyers of sales consultants, beyond Google.

Search matters, but it is rarely the only way this industry's buyers find a supplier.

  • Managing directors and owners of growing companies

Messages and meeting requests timed to the quarter-end review, in the words an owner uses about the sales team.

  • Sales heads and national sales managers

They carry the target and answer to the board, so posts and outreach use the problems on their own review slides.

  • Chartered accountants and investors

A statutory auditor or an investor sees a missed quarter in the figures. An introduction explains when to suggest a sales diagnostic.

  • HR heads and training managers

They book the sales training budget. A comparison of a course day with a process diagnostic helps them see when a consultant fits.

  • Trade associations of dealers and distributors

Talks and notes for associations whose members complain that dealers order less and discount more.

Who it is for

This is written for these sales consultants.

  • Sales process and pipeline consultants for B2B companies
  • Field sales and distribution consultants for FMCG and consumer durables
  • Consultants for dealer and channel partner sales
  • Sales team structure and incentive design advisers
  • Sales coaches working with managers and top performers
  • Consultants for technology and software sales teams
  • Export and institutional sales advisers
  • Former sales heads who now consult for a few clients at a time

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • You want a guaranteed Google ranking or a guaranteed number of leads. Nobody honest can promise either.
  • You need enquiries by next week and have nobody to answer them.
  • You want posts and reach reported, not enquiries and orders.

How it works

How the work runs for sales consultants

The work itself, in order. How an engagement starts, from your brief to a written scope, is set out on our method page.

  1. 1

    Read the work already done

Past engagements laid out in order: how each began, what was bought first and what led to more.

  2. 2

    Define the first buy

A diagnostic that a sales head can approve without a long process is written out.

  3. 3

Prepare sample playbooks and case stories

Samples, case stories and the baseline record are prepared with client approval.

  4. 4

    Go to the triggers

Pages, ads and introductions aimed at the moments a target slips.

  5. 5

    Review against the baseline

Diagnostics and engagements set against the starting numbers. A trigger page that fills the inbox but sells no diagnostic is rewritten before another is added.

Where this fits

Three pieces of sales work, in this order.

GullySales builds every engagement from three pieces of sales work. This page is not one of them, but the same three steps apply to the business behind it.

  1. Step 1

    Sales audit

Find where deals are being lost and what to fix first.

Start here if you cannot say where orders are lost.

  2. Step 2

    Sales process design

One written way to sell, from first enquiry to repeat order.

Start here if every salesperson sells differently.

  3. Step 3

    Sales management

A target, a review routine and someone who owns the number.

Start here if the team has targets and no routine.

FAQ

Questions sales consultants ask before they call.

Not here? More answers, or ask on WhatsApp.

We train sales teams and we also consult. How should we position?
Lead with the problem the buyer has, such as a missed target or a drifting dealer network, and show training as one of several tools. Buyers who see only training will compare you by the day.
Can you help us show results that clients will not let us name?
Yes. We describe the type of company, how it sells, the problem and the change, and leave out names and figures the client has not approved.
Do you run sales for our clients?
No. Your clients run their own sales. We help you win the clients and keep them, and we do not promise any client's sales numbers.
Is paid advertising right for a sales consultant?
For specific searches such as sales process consultant or fixing a field sales team, a small test can work. Introductions and your own writing bring the larger engagements.
How do you measure whether this works for us?
Enquiries, diagnostics and engagements are entered by source before work starts, and later entries are compared with that starting record. No number of engagements is promised.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped after we have read your brief and spoken to you, and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after we have spoken, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you speak to before anything starts. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
To start, last month's enquiries in any format and time with whoever handles them. After that, access to the accounts the work touches, such as the website, Google Business Profile or CRM.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.
