Magazine advertising · Marketing

A magazine page is booked weeks before the issue reaches anybody's desk.

A monthly closes its space weeks before it appears, and the artwork deadline follows a few days later. So a magazine buy is planned around an issue, not around a week. An offer that ends on the 30th has no business being in one.

In one paragraph

Magazine advertising is a paid page, spread or sponsored article in a title bought by one kind of reader, booked well before the issue is printed. GullySales chooses the title by who turns its pages, not by how many copies go out. Artwork is prepared to the publication's specification, and the page carries a traceable route.

The title matters more than the page. A trade magazine read by purchase managers in the pump industry reaches a fraction of the readers a lifestyle glossy does, and sells far more pumps. How many people read it is the wrong question. Who turns the page is the right one.

The other difference is shelf life. A magazine sits on a factory desk or a waiting room table for months, so enquiries arrive long after the issue did. You see none of it unless the page carries a number or a code of its own.

The problem

Does this sound like your business?

What owners tell us on the first call, in their words.

  • We took a full page and heard nothing

The page carried the logo, the address and a line about quality, with nothing for the reader to do and no number that belonged to the ad.

  • The title had a huge readership and none of them buy from us

The buy was made on how many copies go out instead of on whether those readers decide what your industry purchases.

  • Our artwork came back rejected

A file built for a brochure went in without bleed, at screen resolution and in the wrong colour profile. The issue closed while it was being fixed.

  • The magazine refused our advertorial

The piece read like a price list with a headline on it, so the editorial team would not run it in their layout.

What we do

Everything that is included.

Each deliverable, and what it gets you. Nothing here is an extra.

  1. Title shortlist by reader

Trade, business and lifestyle titles judged on who reads them and what those readers sign off on.

  2. Issue and lead time plan

Space closing dates and material deadlines for each issue you want, lined up against your own dates.

  3. Format and position brief

Full page, half page, double spread or a cover position, and what a spread loses down the gutter.

  4. Artwork to the publication's specification

Bleed, trim, safe area, colour profile and file format exactly as the title's spec sheet asks.

  5. Advertorial copy

A sponsored article written to be worth reading, carrying whatever advertisement label the publication requires.

  6. Traceable response route

A number, QR code or short web address used only in that issue, so a call in March traces back to a January page.

  7. Booking coordination

The order placed with the publication or its agency, with issue, format, position and rate confirmed in writing.

How the result is measured

  • Calls and messages to the number printed in that issue
  • Scans of the code on the page
  • Enquiries that name the title when asked how they found you
  • Cost per enquiry across the insertions in a series
  • Issues that carried the page at the booked format and position

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, then reported every month against it.

Who it is for

This is written for you if these sound familiar.

  • Manufacturers and industrial suppliers whose buyer is a purchase manager, not a consumer
  • Architects, interior designers and anyone selling a product that gets written into a specification
  • A jeweller, hotel or resort selling on how the thing looks, where print quality earns the page
  • Companies with a stand at an exhibition, where the show issue is handed out at the door
  • Dealers and distributors recruiting partners out of an industry that reads one title

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • Anything with a deadline inside the next month. The issue will not be on the stands in time.
  • A business that needs enquiries this week. Response from a monthly arrives in a trickle over months.
  • Local services whose customers come from two kilometres away. Google Business Profile and local search reach them sooner and cheaper.

How it works

From your first message to the first monthly report.

No open-ended retainer. Each step has a point in time and something you receive.

  1. 01 · Day 1

    Free audit call

45 minutes with whoever handles your enquiries: how they arrive, how fast they are answered, where they are lost.

  2. 02 · Within a few working days

    Written, scored report

Six areas scored, fixes ranked by return and cost. If you want our help, the scope and fee come with it, in writing.

  3. 03 · Before work starts

    Baseline recorded

Enquiries by source, reply time, conversion and cost per order, written down so every later month has an honest comparison.

  4. 04 · Month 1

    The first fix goes live

Usually the cheapest one on the report: reply time, a follow-up sequence or the marketing-to-sales handover.

  5. 05 · Every month

    Report against the baseline

What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words.

  6. 06 · Month 3 to 6

    Renew on the numbers

The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. No twelve-month lock.

How the magazine advertising work runs

  1. 1

    Work backwards from the issue

We ask each title for its space closing and material dates, then see which issue your campaign can realistically make.

  2. 2

    Shortlist the titles

Trade against lifestyle, judged on the reader you need rather than the readership claimed.

  3. 3

Decide what the page asks for

A display page, a spread or an advertorial, and the one thing a reader should do after reading it.

  4. 4

    Produce the page

Copy and artwork built to the publication's specification, with the response route printed on the page itself.

  5. 5

    Book and release

We place the order, send the material ahead of the deadline, and confirm the issue, position and rate in writing.

  6. 6

    Count what came back

Calls, scans and enquiries that name the title, counted across the whole series rather than one issue.

Proof

What happened when owners fixed this.

Real clients, the work we did, and the result as it was recorded. Where no number was recorded, none is claimed.

Why us

Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.

  • Marketing and sales, as one job

Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.

  • The person on the first call does the work

No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.

  • A baseline before anything starts

Your numbers are written down on day one, so every monthly report compares against something honest.

  • The fee in writing, split three ways

Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.

  • No lock-in, no guarantees we cannot keep

Three to six months at a time. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.

  • One office, and we say so

Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. We work across India by call and WhatsApp and travel when a session needs to be in person.

#257, 3rd floor, Sri Nanjundeshwara Complex, Nagarbhavi 8th Block, Outer Ring Road. How we work.

Start with the fix the audit ranks first, such as reply time or follow-up. The fee is in writing before anything starts.

  3. Option 3

    A three-to-six-month programme

We run the work month by month, report against the baseline every month, and you renew on the numbers. No twelve-month lock.

  4. Option 4

Guidance for your own team or agency

We plan, brief and check the work of your in-house team or current agency, instead of replacing them.

FAQ

Questions owners ask before they call.

Not here? More answers, or ask on WhatsApp.

How far ahead do we have to book a magazine ad?
Further ahead than owners expect. A monthly stops selling space weeks before the issue prints, and artwork is due shortly after, so the issue you can still get into may be two months out. We ask the title for both dates before anything is promised to you.
What is an advertorial, and will a magazine run one?
An advertorial is a paid page written and laid out like an article, carrying a label that marks it as an advertisement. Most titles run them on their own conditions: their layout, their label, no journalist's byline, and no swipe at a named competitor. The editorial team decides, and a piece that reads like a price list comes back.
Trade title or lifestyle title for a B2B product?
The trade title. It reaches the engineer in a Peenya workshop who writes the specification and the manager who signs the purchase order, while the lifestyle title reaches their family on a Sunday. A trade readership is smaller, and that is exactly the point of it.
Is one insertion enough?
No. A single page is turned past by a reader who does not know the name and has no reason to stop. Three or four issues in a row is what gets a trade advertiser recognised, so we plan a magazine buy as a series or advise against it.
Can you get us the back cover?
We can ask. Cover positions carry a premium and are usually held by an advertiser who books the full year, so they come free rarely and at short notice. GullySales coordinates the booking with the publication or its agency and holds no space or rate of its own.
How is this priced?
The space is quoted by the publication, by format, position and issue. Our own work has no published price. It is scoped in the free audit and written down in three parts: our time, what the title charges for the page, and producing the artwork or the advertorial.
How long is the contract?
Three to six months at a time. There is no twelve-month lock, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
Fixes to reply time, follow-up and your Google Business Profile usually show in weeks, because the enquiries already exist. Ads show in days once follow-up is ready. SEO and content take months. The audit tells you which applies to you.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you meet on the audit call. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
For the audit, last month's enquiries in any format and 45 minutes with whoever handles them. After that, access to the accounts the work touches, such as the website, Google Business Profile or CRM, and time for the monthly review.
