Marketing a painting business comes down to being the contractor people already know when the season arrives. Repainting is bought a few times in a lifetime, by four kinds of buyer, mostly between the end of the monsoon and Diwali, on the word of a neighbour, a paint dealer or a society committee. So the work is to be in those three places before September, to show finished walls rather than tins, and to quote in writing with the brand, the grade, the coats and the days named. Advertising comes a long way after all of that.

Who buys painting, and when

BuyerWhen they buyWhere they lookWhat wins
A homeowner repaintingSix to eight weeks before Diwali, or before a wedding in the houseA neighbour, the paint dealer, MapsPhotographs of finished rooms, a clear quote, a crew that cleans up
A new flat ownerThe month between handover and moving inThe owners' WhatsApp group, the builder's handover deskBeing in the group early, and a fixed price per flat type
An apartment associationAfter the monsoon, on a committee vote, once in several yearsOther societies, the paint company's projects team, a tender to three contractorsA written proposal with a site survey, references, a warranty in writing
Shops, offices and schoolsBefore reopening: schools in May, shops before Diwali and the year endA contractor they have used, the interior designer, the dealerNight work, speed, one person to call

Two things to read off that table. The buyer asks somebody before searching, every time. And the calendar is fixed: exteriors cannot be done in the rain, and every homeowner wants the same three weeks in October. Your marketing year starts in July.

The dealer's counter and the Maps result

The man at the paint counter is asked "do you know a good painter" every day of the season. Be the name he gives.

Visit the three dealers nearest your area with photographs of finished work and a copy of your quote format. Buy from them on account and pay on time, because a contractor who pays is a contractor they recommend. The paint companies run programmes for contractors; ask your dealer what is on offer this year rather than reading about it, since the terms change. Send the dealer a customer whenever you can. Do not tie yourself to one dealer in your first years. You need three.

The other place the homeowner looks is Maps, and there the rule is finished walls, not tins. Search "painters near me" and most profiles show a logo and a stock photograph of a roller. Yours should show the living room in Kondapur you finished on Friday, before and after, taken in daylight from the same spot, with the owner's permission.

List your service area by locality, since that is how the next customer searches. Ask for the review on the last day of the job, when the furniture is back and the owner is pleased, and have the supervisor who was on site ask, not a message a week later. Answer every review and name the locality in the reply. The rest of the profile work is on our page for local SEO for painting contractors.

The society contract is a committee sale

Exterior repainting of a two-hundred-flat society is the biggest ticket in this trade, and it is won differently. The managing committee decides. The treasurer worries about the number, the secretary worries about complaints, and a resident who is an engineer reads your proposal line by line.

So the pitch is a document. A site survey with photographs of the cracks and the damp patches. The system proposed, coat by coat: crack filling, primer, exterior emulsion, and how many coats of each. The brand and grade. The scaffolding and the safety arrangement. Days and crew size. The warranty terms your supplier will put in writing. Two societies they may telephone. Attend the general body meeting if invited, and answer the engineer.

Getting on the tender list is its own job: the paint companies' projects teams, the facility management firms, and the secretaries of societies you have already painted, who talk to other secretaries.

The possession-time push in a new tower

A new tower hands over three hundred flats within a few months. Every owner paints before moving in, and none of them knows a painter in the area.

Ask the builder for permission to put a board at the gate during the handover period. Join the owners' WhatsApp group when a resident invites you, and post once, with a per-flat package. For example, a contractor in Miyapur, Hyderabad, quotes an illustrative ₹38,000 for a 2BHK interior in a named mid-range emulsion, one coat of primer and two of paint, with the shade card, furniture cover and clean-up included. One price, one page, one number to call. Ten flats in one tower is a month of work with no travel between sites.

What goes in the quote

The quote is marketing, because it is what the customer forwards to the neighbour.

  • Brand, grade and colour code of every paint, so the customer can check the price at the dealer
  • Square feet measured on site, not estimated on the phone
  • Putty, primer and the number of coats, wall by wall if the walls differ
  • Who moves and covers the furniture, and who cleans up
  • Days on site and the number of painters
  • Exclusions written out: electrical points, minor civil repair, waterproofing
  • Payment in stages, and a validity date

What is not worth the money for a small contractor

Newspaper classifieds and radio. Pay-per-lead apps that sell the same enquiry to five contractors who then race to the bottom. Paid directory listings promising verified leads, which bring the customer who wants the cheapest of five quotes. A template website with stock photographs. And a Diwali discount, because by then you are already full and the discount only lowers the price of work you would have won anyway.

What to do next

Before July, do three things. Photograph every finished job before and after from the same spot. Visit the three nearest paint dealers with those photographs. Write the per-flat package for the new towers within five kilometres of you. Then ask every finishing customer for a review on the last day. If you want your season planned with the dealers, societies and towers in your area mapped out, tell us what you need.

Questions

Questions owners ask.

When should a painting contractor start marketing for the Diwali season?
In July. Exteriors cannot be painted in the rain, so every homeowner and every society wants the same weeks between the end of the monsoon and Diwali. The dealer visits, the photographs, the society proposals and the review requests all have to be done before the enquiries start, because once they start you are on site.
Does a painting business need a website?
Only one that shows finished rooms and your quote format. A template site with stock photographs of rollers and no indication of price does nothing your Google Business Profile does not already do. Put the money into photographs of real work and reviews first, and build the site when you have twenty jobs to show.
Are pay-per-lead apps worth it for painters?
Rarely, for a small contractor. The same enquiry is sold to several painters at once, the customer collects five quotes and takes the cheapest, and the margin that pays your crew goes to the app. The dealer referral, the society secretary and the finished-wall photograph bring the customer who is not shopping on price alone.
How do I win an apartment society repainting contract?
With a document, not a visit. A site survey with photographs of the cracks and damp patches, the system you propose coat by coat, the brand and grade, the scaffolding and safety arrangement, days and crew size, the warranty terms your supplier will put in writing, and two societies they may call. The committee's engineer reads it, and the contractor whose proposal answers his questions is the one he trusts.
