GullySales

E-commerce · Fresh & Frozen Food

Customers know the name of the fish they want, and what we call it is different.

A seafood buyer in Mangaluru asks for bangude and one in Kolkata asks for ilish. The same species has a different name every hundred kilometres, and a listing that uses only the market name is invisible to the searcher using the household one. Spelling, local language and size grade all decide whether you are found.

A 90-minute audit call and a written, scored report. Turnaround, reporting and term are agreed in writing after the audit.

In one paragraph

Seafood e-commerce is the online sale of fresh and frozen fish, prawns, crab and other shellfish, whole, cleaned or cut, to households who buy by local name, size and catch. GullySales works on how your listings use the names buyers know, how the catch and cleaning are described, and how orders are collected before the boat comes in.

Seafood also depends on the day's catch. What you can sell tomorrow is not known today, so a store that shows a fixed list and a fixed price is promising what the sea may not provide.

Last updated 7 Oct 2026. Product, labelling and advertising rules for fresh & frozen food differ by product and change. We describe them in general terms, so check the current position with your own adviser or the regulator before you publish a claim.

Who it is for

This is written for you if you sell seafood online.

  • Fish sellers and fishing cooperatives on the coast who deliver to nearby cities
  • Online fish brands that clean, cut and pack for home cooking
  • Prawn, crab and shellfish sellers with a frozen supply
  • Freshwater fish farms selling in inland towns

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • A seller who cannot say when the fish was landed or caught
  • Anyone with no way to keep fish iced or frozen all the way to the buyer

How buyers choose

What decides the sale of seafood.

  1. The name the buyer uses

Pomfret, surmai, rohu, sardine, bangda, tiger prawn. Buyers type the local name in their own script, so the listing needs the common name and the one used at home.

  2. Size grade and count

Prawns by count per kilo, fish by piece weight, crab by size. The grade is the price, and the buyer reads it carefully.

  3. Whole, cleaned or cut

A buyer who will cook it that day wants it cleaned and cut, while another wants it whole to cut at home. Net weight after cleaning differs, and the page has to say which one the price is for.

  4. Landing date and how it was kept

Fresh, chilled, frozen, caught this morning or last night. The seafood buyer checks the day and the method before the price.

Where sales are lost

What usually goes wrong when you sell seafood online.

In the words sellers use on the first call.

  • “Customers order what is not available that day”

A fixed menu on the page ends in cancellations. An order list that opens when the catch is known, or a sold-out marker that updates, protects the promise.

  • “Fish smells and the buyer blames us”

A strong smell on arrival draws more complaints than almost anything else. The listing should say how to judge freshness, and a photograph of the packed ice shows how it travelled.

  • “Inland buyers think fish online means frozen”

A seller who delivers chilled fish within hours needs to prove it, with a landing date, the route and the ice used.

What we do

What you get for seafood.

Each deliverable and what it is there to change.

  1. A species name list in your languages

The common, local and market names for every fish and prawn you sell, used across titles, search pages and WhatsApp messages.

  2. A size-grade and yield chart

Count per kilo for prawns and weight bands for fish, with whole and cleaned weights side by side.

  3. A catch-day order message

A format for announcing today's landing to past buyers, with prices and slots, ready to send each time the boat is in.

  4. A freshness guide for the box

What fresh looks like, how to store, how long it keeps, and what to send a photograph of if the buyer is unhappy.

How the result is measured

  • Purchases
  • Conversion rate
  • Customer acquisition cost
  • Repeat purchase rate
  • Return rate
  • Cancellations for an item not landed

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

How it works

From your first message to the first report.

No open-ended retainer. Every step gives you something in writing.

  1. First

    Free audit call

90 minutes with whoever handles your enquiries: how they arrive, how fast they are answered, where they are lost.

  2. After the call

    Written, scored report

Six areas scored, fixes ranked by return and cost. If you want our help, the scope, the fee and the reporting come with it, in writing.

  3. Before work starts

    Baseline recorded

Enquiries by source, reply time, conversion and cost per order, written down so every later report has an honest comparison.

  4. After the baseline

    The first fix goes live

Usually the cheapest one on the report: reply time, a follow-up sequence or the marketing-to-sales handover.

  5. As agreed

    Report against the baseline

What moved, what did not, and what changes next, in plain words. How often you get it is set in writing before work starts.

  6. At renewal

    Renew on the numbers

The term ends and you decide whether to continue from the results. The length is agreed in writing before anything starts.

What we need from you

What to have ready before the audit call.

None of it has to be tidy. We read what you have.

  • The fish and shellfish you sell, with names in each language
  • Your landing and supply pattern through the year
  • Your cold-chain method from landing to doorstep
  • Complaint records, including smell, weight and lateness
  • Delivery areas and the buyers who order regularly

Selling in India and abroad

Selling seafood beyond your own market.

Where you sell decides sizes, units, seasons and returns. We work from Bengaluru and have no overseas office, so for a new country we start from your own sales and the platforms you already use.

  1. Seafood export is a licensed trade

Overseas sales of seafood go through exporters, with checks and documentation set by the destination country. If you export, we look at importer enquiries, not at household orders.

  2. Indian coastal communities abroad

Families in the Gulf and elsewhere search for the fish they grew up eating. Whether frozen or dried products can be sent to them is checked with your adviser before a campaign.

FAQ

Questions about selling seafood online.

Not here? More answers, or ask on WhatsApp.

How do I sell fish online when the catch changes every day?
Do not promise a fixed menu. Collect pre-orders for the species you expect and confirm after landing, or send a catch-day list by WhatsApp. Buyers accept a limited choice if they are told the truth.
Which name should I use for each fish on the listing?
Both: the name a buyer in your area uses at home, and the common English name. A buyer searching in Malayalam will not find a page that only has the market name. We build the name list from your own customers' messages.
Can I sell frozen fish and call it fresh?
No. Frozen and fresh are different products, buyers can tell, and labelling rules exist that your adviser can explain. Call it what it is and show the date, since honest frozen fish sells better than disputed fresh fish.
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, because the work differs by business. The fee is scoped in the free audit and put in writing before anything starts, split into our time, your media spend and production.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after the audit, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
Fixes to reply time, follow-up and your Google Business Profile are the quickest to show, because the enquiries already exist. Ads can follow soon after follow-up is in place. SEO and content take longer. How long each takes depends on your business, and the audit tells you which applies to you. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you meet on the audit call. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
For the audit, last month's enquiries in any format and 90 minutes with whoever handles them. After that, access to the accounts the work touches, such as the website, Google Business Profile or CRM, and time for the review meetings.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.

Why us

Why owners pick GullySales over an agency.

  • Marketing and sales, as one job

Most agencies stop at the enquiry. We also fix what happens after it: the reply, the follow-up, the quote and the CRM.

  • The person on the first call does the work

No account managers in between. You are never handed to someone you have not met.

  • A baseline before anything starts

Your numbers are written down on day one, so every later report compares against something honest.

  • The fee in writing, split three ways

Our time, your media spend and production on separate lines. You always see what goes to us.

  • No guarantees we cannot keep

The term is agreed in writing and never a default twelve months. We never promise a ranking or a lead count, because nobody controls those.

  • One office, and we say so

Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. We work across India by call and WhatsApp and travel when a session needs to be in person.
