Domestic tour operators · Hospitality

Sell the Kerala, Rajasthan and Himachal trips on the answer you send, not the brochure.

Picture a Tuesday night in March. A mother in Jayanagar sends a screenshot of a Munnar reel to three operators and asks for a plan for six adults and two children in May. The first operator to answer with hotel names, a vehicle type and one clear total gets the next message. The others get a thumbs-up emoji and silence.

Scope, fee, reporting and term are agreed in writing after we have read your brief and spoken to you.

Realistic editorial illustration of travel agencies and tour operators at work in India

In one paragraph

A domestic tour operator sells packaged trips within India, either private itineraries for one family or fixed group departures by the seat. Domestic tour marketing gets the trip found by people planning from their own city. GullySales builds the destination pages, the WhatsApp quote routine and the seat-filling follow-up.

Domestic trips are cheap enough to book on impulse, and a family cannot judge a stranger's itinerary at a glance. So the sale is made on the quality of the answer, not on the brochure. Operators who run fixed departures have a second problem: an empty seat on a departure that is already paid for earns nothing once the vehicle leaves.

How buyers decide

How domestic tour operators are chosen.

Domestic buyers start on Instagram and YouTube, where a Coorg or Spiti video plants the idea weeks before dates exist. When dates firm up, they search for the destination with their city name and ask friends in the family WhatsApp group. Two or three operators get the same message, and the family compares replies side by side.

Group departures are chosen differently. A solo traveller or a couple looks for a date, a price per head and photographs of people like themselves on the last batch. A family planning a private trip wants a named vehicle, a named hotel and a driver they will not be arguing with at Shimla at nine at night.

Season sets the pace. April to June is the summer rush, October and November carry Diwali trips, and December brings Goa, Kerala and the hills in snow. The monsoon is a gap for many itineraries, while Kerala wellness stays on the table, so an operator needs a monsoon plan of their own.

The problem

What usually goes wrong for domestic tour operators.

What owners tell us on the first call, in their words.

  • “We build a full itinerary and the family books the hotels directly”

The quote carried our research. They copied the hotel names, found them online at a lower rate and never replied.

  • “A group departure has four empty seats a week before it leaves”

The hotels and the tempo traveller are already booked, so the empty seats are a straight loss, and we cannot discount without upsetting the people who paid full.

  • “Our price looks higher than the other operator's”

Theirs leaves out entry tickets, the airport pickup and the night halts on the way. The customer only sees the total.

  • “Every enquiry says what is the price for Manali”

We do not know the dates, the number of people or whether they want a private car. We either guess a price or lose the lead.

  • “Last year's travellers do not come back”

A family that loved the Rajasthan trip booked Goa with someone else, because nobody asked them in October.

  • “Bad weather and road closures turn into complaints”

A landslide on the highway or a cancelled flight reaches the customer before our message does, and the review that follows blames us.

What we do

What we do for domestic tour operators.

Everything included for domestic tour operators.

  1. A quote format with every cost line named

Hotels by name, vehicle type, entry tickets, toll and parking, meal plan, and what the price leaves out. The same layout for every enquiry.

  2. A page for each destination you actually run

Day-by-day plan, best months, who it suits, road and weather notes, and photographs from your own departures.

  3. Three questions asked before any price is given

Dates, number of adults and children, and private car or group seat. Kept in a short WhatsApp reply script.

  4. A seat-filling routine for each departure

A list of who enquired and did not book, a message to them when seats are left, and a cut-off date after which you decide what to do with the vehicle.

  5. Delay and cancellation messages written in advance

Short WhatsApp notes for a road closure, a flight change or a hotel swap, sent by the trip lead before the guest hears it elsewhere.

  6. Traveller photographs and Google reviews collected on the last day

A request at the final dinner or drop-off, with permission to use the pictures.

  7. An enquiry record by destination and month

Source, dates asked, quote sent, booked or lost, with the reason noted.

How the result is measured

  • Enquiries by source and destination
  • Time to first reply on WhatsApp
  • Quotes sent against seats or trips booked
  • Seats unsold at seven days before departure
  • Repeat travellers and referrals
  • Google reviews collected per departure

Recorded as a baseline before work starts, so every later report has an honest comparison.

Worth a page and a campaign of their own

Kerala backwater and hill station packages · Rajasthan heritage circuits · Himachal and Kashmir summer trips · Ladakh and Spiti departures · North East circuits with permits · Andaman packages for honeymooners and families · Weekend trips from Bengaluru and other metros · Women-only group departures · Goa group and friends trips · Winter snow trips for December and January

Priority campaigns

Campaigns for what domestic tour operators most want to sell.

Each one planned around when your buyers decide, and measured against the baseline.

  • Summer holidays opened early

Destination pages and WhatsApp messages to last year's travellers well before the summer rush, with seats on each May and June departure.

  • Monsoon and shoulder-season departures

Kerala, Coorg and Northeast trips sold on green hills and lower rates, aimed at couples and friends who cannot travel in peak months.

  • Long weekend getaways from Bengaluru

Two-night plans posted ahead of each long weekend, with a booking cut-off and a clear pickup point.

  • Women-only departures

Pages and reels that show the itinerary, the stays and the trip lead, shared in local women's groups and with past travellers.

  • Repeat traveller note

A note to each past traveller timed to the month of their last trip, with a new destination suggested.

Beyond search

Where we reach buyers of domestic tour operators, beyond Google.

Search matters, but it is rarely the only way this industry's buyers find a supplier.

  • Offices and apartment communities

A short pack for the HR or events head in a company park and for the association secretary in a large apartment community, for weekend trips and festival tours.

  • Colleges and alumni groups

The student group lead who has to bring forty people together needs a trip page and a deposit-and-seat plan to forward.

  • Women's clubs and hobby groups

Trekking clubs, cycling groups and ladies' associations plan a trip together, so they get one departure calendar to pass around the group chat.

  • Taxi and hotel partners at your destinations

A rate and referral understanding with a trusted driver and two or three hotels, so the trip does not depend on a different local contact each time.

  • Wedding planners

A guest-travel offer for out-of-town relatives who want to add a few days of sightseeing after a wedding.

Who it is for

This is written for these domestic tour operators.

  • Operators running fixed group departures to the hills and the Northeast
  • Private family and friends trip planners
  • South India circuit specialists covering Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu
  • Rajasthan and Gujarat heritage and desert tour operators
  • Goa and beach holiday package sellers
  • Himalayan and Ladakh circuit operators
  • Andaman and island tour operators
  • Weekend getaway and short-break organisers from metro cities
  • Women-only and solo-traveller group trip organisers
  • Wellness and Ayurveda retreat package sellers

Not for

It is not the right fit if.

  • You want a guaranteed Google ranking or a guaranteed number of leads. Nobody honest can promise either.
  • You need enquiries by next week and have nobody to answer them.
  • You want posts and reach reported, not enquiries and orders.

How it works

How the work runs for domestic tour operators

The work itself, in order. How an engagement starts, from your brief to a written scope, is set out on our method page.

  1. 1

    Read the last season

The departures you ran, which filled, which did not, and where each booking first came from.

  2. 2

    Fix the first reply

The quote layout and the opening WhatsApp questions are drafted, then tried on your next ten enquiries.

  3. 3

Photograph and write up each trip you run well

Each trip you run well gets a page built from your own photographs and day plans.

  4. 4

Mark the rush, Diwali and monsoon on one calendar

Summer rush, Diwali, December, the long weekends and the monsoon plan, with a decision on when each departure is promoted.

  5. 5

    Keep the travellers

Every guest leaves the last dinner with a review request, a photograph permission slip and a next-trip suggestion.

Where this fits

Three pieces of sales work, in this order.

GullySales builds every engagement from three pieces of sales work. This page is not one of them, but the same three steps apply to the business behind it.

  1. Step 1

    Sales audit

Find where deals are being lost and what to fix first.

Start here if you cannot say where orders are lost.

  2. Step 2

    Sales process design

One written way to sell, from first enquiry to repeat order.

Start here if every salesperson sells differently.

  3. Step 3

    Sales management

A target, a review routine and someone who owns the number.

Start here if the team has targets and no routine.

FAQ

Questions domestic tour operators ask before they call.

Not here? More answers, or ask on WhatsApp.

Do we need our own website when travellers use Instagram?
Yes, a simple one. Instagram brings the first look, but someone about to pay a deposit searches your name and wants dates, itinerary and reviews on a page. Without it, the booking goes to the operator who has one.
Should we quote a price when a customer only asks for it on WhatsApp?
Give a range with what it covers, then ask the three questions: dates, people and car or seat. A figure quoted blind either loses you the lead or loses you money on the trip.
How do we deal with last-minute cancellations on a fixed departure?
Put the refund slabs in writing on the booking form and the trip page before a deposit is taken. Hotels and vehicles are paid in advance, so the policy has to say so plainly.
Are travel aggregators a threat to a small operator?
A smaller operator cannot out-list a platform on flights and hotels alone. Where the trip needs a driver, a local stay and someone who answers at night, the buyer is choosing a person, and that is where you compete.
What licences or registrations should we show on the site?
Put GST and any state tourism registration in the footer and on the booking form. Rules differ by state and change, so your adviser should tell you what applies to you.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after we have spoken, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
How soon will we see results?
Fixes to reply time, follow-up and your Google Business Profile are the quickest to show, because the enquiries already exist. Ads can follow soon after follow-up is in place. SEO and content take longer. How long each takes depends on your business, and we tell you which applies to you after we have spoken. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you speak to before anything starts. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
To start, last month's enquiries in any format and time with whoever handles them. After that, access to the accounts the work touches, such as the website, Google Business Profile or CRM.
