Advice cannot be inspected before it is bought, so the clearest firm is the one chosen.

An owner whose orders keep slipping does not search for a consulting firm in general. A friend mentions a name, the owner opens a phone, reads two or three profiles, and sends one message late in the evening. The consultant who has a clear page about that exact problem, a person to talk to and a plain way to start gets the call. The others were never in the conversation.

Realistic editorial illustration of business consultants at work in India

In one paragraph

Business consulting is the sale of advice and structured projects, from strategy and sales to operations, quality, compliance, hiring, fundraising and trade, to owners and boards who cannot see the answer from inside. GullySales looks at how those buyers first meet a consultant, what proof they can read before a call, and how a worried enquiry becomes a scoped engagement.

The seventeen trades here sell very different advice. A strategy firm talks to boards and can wait a long time for a paid diagnostic, while an ISO consultant answers an enquiry that already carries a tender deadline. Recruitment agencies and franchise consultants each sell to two different audiences. What they share is that the work cannot be seen before it starts, the buyer is worried, and the sale rests on being believed.

21 kinds of business

Each kind of business in business consulting sells a little differently.

Open the page closest to yours for how its buyers choose and what we would fix first.

Management consulting firms

Partners originate the work, so a shortlist depends on named leaders with a clear point of view. Tight scoping in the proposal matters where eligibility rules decide who is invited at all.

Strategy consulting firms

Boards and promoter families seldom admit a problem to a stranger, so a reputation for clear thinking has to exist first. A defined paid diagnostic then gives the conversation somewhere to go.

Business growth consultants

The owner has stopped growing and cannot say why. Set against a cheaper consultant or the company accountant, you win with plain stories of what was changed, not with a framework.

Sales consultants

A sales head who has missed a target calls in a hurry and drifts away once the quarter recovers. To stand apart from sales trainers, show how you diagnose process, team and coaching, and make the first call easy to book.

Marketing consultants

Founders file you next to agencies. Your proof sits in strategy, channel choice and budget advice, with posting and other execution plainly left to others.

Franchise consultants

One site, two readers: a brand owner preparing to franchise and an investor picking a brand to buy. They need separate pages, and neither should meet a claim about what a franchise earns.

HR consultants

Founders search for the problem, such as a missed PF filing, and never for HR. Pages built on that problem carry the sale, and an urgent compliance enquiry left waiting goes to the next firm.

Recruitment consultants

Hiring managers and candidates read different pages. The agency stands out by naming the roles it fills well and sending a screened shortlist that explains why each person fits.

Operations consultants

The plant, branch or team runs late and the owner phones with a vague worry. Be known for one daily problem you fix, such as delays, wastage or handovers.

Supply chain consultants

Too much of one item and none of another is how the owner puts it. Show the product types you have handled, and offer a scoped study as the way in.

Business process consultants

Owners whose work runs on phone calls and spreadsheets cannot picture a process map. One drawn example of a stalled workflow sells better than a method name.

Quality management consultants

A customer's corrective action request sends the supplier searching in a hurry for someone who knows the defect and the audit. What you achieve still depends on the shop floor.

ISO consultants

The enquiry carries a deadline from a tender or a customer, so ask what the certificate is for before quoting. Surveillance audits and renewals are a second sale that gets forgotten.

Startup consultants

First-time founders pick a structure and registrations before their first customer, and some assume you only do registration. Show the wider help, from a first product plan to a first customer.

Fundraising consultants

Founders who have decided to raise want help with materials and meetings, and compare you on success fee. Keep the page free of any hint of an investor outcome.

Export-import consultants

Owners call at two moments: when they decide to sell abroad and when a consignment is stuck. Paperwork knowledge laid out in plain steps does the selling.

Digital transformation consultants

Owners brace for a software pitch. Lead with a plan for how the business runs, and keep yourself visibly apart from resellers and agencies.

Document scanning and digitisation services

The buyer wants proof that the firm has cleared a records room like theirs, so a site visit that asks about indexing and privacy beats a rate per page quoted over the phone.

IT staffing and contract hiring firms

A staffing firm wins by being trusted twice, by the hiring manager who gets profiles worth reading and by the candidate who was asked before the CV was sent.

Global capability centre and offshore development centre consultants

A board comparing a captive centre with a vendor contract chooses the adviser who explains the build, partner or outsource decision plainly and says which legal and tax questions belong to the client's own advisers.

BPO, KPO and contact centre companies

An outsourcing buyer shortlists the vendor that hands over a written process note and a data handling statement early, and proposes a pilot with a clear finish.

What they share

What usually goes wrong across business consulting.

Whichever of these you run, you will probably recognise most of them.

  • “Our work reaches us through a few people who remember us”

Some months are full and some are empty. Where a handful of contacts decide who gets named, the pipeline follows whoever mentioned the firm last.

  • “Our website describes what we do and not what the buyer arrives with”

A page that lists services reads like every other adviser. A buyer arrives holding one particular problem and looks for the page that names it.

  • “We have done good work but cannot show it without breaking confidence”

Confidentiality limits names and numbers. Proof has to come as a described situation, what was changed and what the client said in their own words, shared with permission.

  • “The first conversation goes well and then nothing happens”

The buyer asks for something to be sent, and silence follows. Without a named owner for the follow-up and a short, scoped first step, interest cools while the buyer returns to the day's urgent work.

  • “Buyers compare us with the wrong alternative”

A buyer who cannot judge advice weighs a firm against something cheaper or closer at hand. The page has to say what you do, what you leave to others and why that suits the buyer.

  • “The people who sell are the people who deliver”

Writing, speaking and replying to enquiries fall to the same few people who are busy on client work. Marketing that depends on a partner finding spare time stalls whenever an engagement gets heavy.

  • “We cannot say which channel brought the engagement we signed”

Several routes feed one decision, and the buyer rarely remembers which one mattered. Without one record of where each enquiry came from, effort goes to the loudest channel.

Where to start

What to fix first in business consulting.

In the order we would look at them. Your own enquiry records may change the order, and we would say so.

  • Choose the one problem or buyer you want to be known for and rebuild the first page of the website around it, in the words that buyer uses for the problem.
  • Write three or four described client situations with permission, covering what the problem looked like, what was changed and what the client said, without invented figures.
  • Every enquiry needs a named person to answer it, a plain way to book a first conversation and a short written note of what happens next.
  • Define a small, scoped first step with a stated deliverable, so that a worried buyer can say yes before committing to a long engagement.
  • Keep one list of every enquiry and everything sent to a buyer, with the date and the next action, and follow up each before it goes quiet.
  • Wherever your buyers look a person up before replying, make that profile complete and state the one problem the person handles, with recommendations from clients who agreed to write them.

FAQ

Questions about business consulting.

Not here? More answers, or ask on WhatsApp.

Should a consultant advertise, or is thought leadership enough?
Articles and talks build trust, and advertising puts a page in front of a buyer who is looking now. Each needs a findable page for the problem you solve to land on.
How do I show results when clients will not allow their names?
Describe the situation without the name: the kind of business, the problem, what was changed and what the client said. Ask for written permission, keep it accurate and avoid figures you cannot show.
Is LinkedIn enough for a consulting practice?
It keeps you visible to people who already know of you and lets a buyer check the person. It does not replace a website the buyer can read before replying.
Should we publish what we charge or how we work?
Explaining how an engagement runs, what the buyer provides and what they receive, helps a hesitant owner. Whether to publish fees is your decision; the steps and the scope are what reduce doubt.
How do we avoid sounding like every other consultant?
Name a specific buyer, a specific problem and a specific first step. Generic phrases such as end-to-end solutions make firms blur together.
Can a small consultancy compete with a large firm for the same client?
Yes, where the buyer wants a senior person who knows the problem. A clear page and honest descriptions of past work carry weight there. Where a formal process sets a minimum size, read the rules before spending effort.
How long is the contract?
The term is agreed in writing after we have spoken, along with the fee and the reporting. It is never a default twelve months, and renewal is decided on the numbers against the baseline recorded at the start.
Who will actually do the work?
The person you speak to before anything starts. We work from one office in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, with no account managers in between.
What do you need from us?
Your brief, and a conversation. After that, access to whatever the work touches, such as your profiles, your website or your accounts, and time with the people who can answer our questions.
What if we are not happy with the work?
Tell us and the plan changes. Everything is reported against the baseline, so a number that is not moving is visible to both sides. The term is in your written scope, and the refund and cancellation policy sets out the rest.
